Baseball Splits with Mt. St. Mary's

MSM 4, Penn 3 Box Score

Penn 8, MSM 1 Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Penn split a baseball doubleheader with Mt. St. Mary's on Saturday, dropping a heartbreaker in game one, 4-3, on a walkoff single before rallying to take game two convincingly, 8-1.

With the split, Penn's record is 8-6. The Mount is now 4-8.

Penn held a 3-1 lead in the opener after Dan Williams launched a two-run homer to left field in the top of the sixth. The Quakers could not hold the lead, allowing single runs in the final three innings for the loss.

In the ninth, reliever Tom Grandieri allowed a leadoff walk. William Gordon came in from the pen, and after a sac bunt advanced the runner to second he issued an intentional walk to bring the double play into play. The next hitter singled to left and Matta scored from second, beating Adrian Thomas' throw.

In game two, the Quakers got back to their offensive ways, racking up eight runs on 11 hits. Penn scored runs in four of the first five innings to provide plenty of support for starter Reid Terry.

In the third inning, Penn broke open a 1-0 game with three two-out runs. A single from Williams scored Thomas and then Grandieri doubled down the line in right to drive in two runs.

After a fourth-inning Gordon homer to left upped the lead to 5-0, Penn added two more runs in the fifth. Grandieri singled home James Mraz and Williams scored on a wild pitch.

Grandieri finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Catcher Will Davis was 1-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI.

Terry pitched a complete game, allowing just the one run on four hits over seven innings.

Penn and Mount St. Mary's play two more games on Sunday starting at noon.
