Baseball Takes Down Temple, 11-6

Penn 11, Temple 6 Box Score

AMBLER, Pa. – The hit parade continued for the Penn baseball team on Wednesday, as the Quakers piled up 11 runs on 14 hits in an 11-6 defeat of Temple in Big 5 baseball action.

The game was tight in the beginning, with Penn holding leads of 2-1, 4-3 and 5-4 before blowing the game open in the seventh inning with a five-spot. Four of the five runs scored in the seventh were unearned as the Owls' defense and pitching came unglued. Temple committed two errors in the inning threw two wild pitches and hit a batter. Adrian Lorenzo had a two-run single in the inning for Penn.

While Temple's pitching and defense were not reliable in the game, Penn was prepared on the defensive side of the ball. The Quakers walked only three hitters all game and induced three inning-ending double plays.

Perhaps no double play was bigger than the one turned to end the fourth inning. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Chris McNulty came in from the bullpen to relieve Vince Voiro. First, the rookie induced a fielder's choice to third baseman Dan Williams to record the first out of the inning, forcing the runner out at the plate. Then with the top of the order up, McNulty turned a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. Penn's lead stayed at 5-3 and what could have been a big inning was curtailed.

Jeremy Maas continued his torrid pace at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. He is now hitting .532 for the season.

Freshman shortstop Derek Vigoa was 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Two of his hits were doubles. Lorenzo had two hits and drove in three runs.

Paul Cusick picked up his third win of the season, allowing one unearned run over two innings. His ERA is now 1.96.

The Quakers are 7-5 and will head to Emmitsburg, Md. this weekend for a four-game series with Mt. St. Mary's.
