PALO ALTO, Calif.--The No. 5 Penn women's lacrosse team scoredthree goals in the final five minutes to cutStanford's lead to onein the second half, but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit and a last minute Cardinal goalas the Quakers were defeated 10-8.

Penn was slow to start in the first half, not scoring until 16:28 into the period when Ali DeLuca netted an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1. Stanford answered with three more goals before the end of the half, while Melissa Lehman fed Chelsea Kocis to make the score 5-2 before the break.

The Quakers picked up the pace in thesecond half, taking 20 shots. Lehman scoredone and assistedSamantha Bird on another while Rachel Manson scored from newcomer Giulia Giordanoin the first20 minutes of the half, but the Cardinal had matched Penn's effort and held on to a four-goal lead.

Down 9-5, Kaitlyn Lombardo, DeLuca and Allison Ambrozy all scored goals in the span of one minute and 10 seconds. DeLuca continued to come up big on the draw controls winning seven in the game, including two late in the game.

With the Quakers within one, the Cardinal opted for a stall and sealed the win with a goal 12 seconds before time expired.

Sarah Waxman made seven saves for Penn while Stanford's Laura Shane came away with 12.

The Quakers remain on the West Coast for one more game vs. Cal-Berkeley, Tuesday. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. ET
