IRVINE - Penn matched up with another ranked team on Monday, playing UC-Irvine out in California. The 47th-ranked Anteaters held serve on their home courts, defeating the Quakers, 4-3.
Penn started the day with a win at doubles, 2-1, to secure the doubles point. Julia Koulbitskaya and Ekaterina Kosminskaya, ranked 17th in the country, defeated Becky Bernhard and Clare Femin, 8-3, at number one doubles. After UC-Irvine won at number three doubles, Maria Anisimova and Charlotte Tansill won at number two to gain the point and a 1-0 lead for Penn.
Yulia Rivelis added to Penn's lead with a win at No. 2 singles, 3-0, retired. Koulbitskaya also was victorious in singles, defeating Femin, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3.
The match was tied with only No. 6 singles left on the courts. Heid Kaloi won a close match with freshman Alexa Ely, 7-5, 7-6 to claim the match for UC-Irvine.
