Penn vs. Temple Game Notes

This is the 37th meeting for Penn and Temple.The Owls lead the all-time series 26-10 winning the last two meetings.The Quakers last defeated Temple in 2003 with a 70-64 decision at the Liacouras Center.Penn is 17-95 all-time against teams currently in the Atlantic 10.
The Quakers are 0-2 in Big 5 play and will wrap up the city slate at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 24. The Red and Blue is 202-197 at The Palestra since the 1974-75 season. The 200th win was recorded on Feb. 17, 2006 against Ivy League foe Columbia (a 64-49 decision). Monica Naltner scored 37 points against Lafayette. The mark tied for sixth on Penn's all-time most points in a game list. She leads the team in boards with 59 and points with 174. The Quakers are undefeated on the road, winning against Lehigh, Rider and Lafayette. Penn scored 78 points against Lafayette, Dec. 9. It was the most points scored in Knapp's tenure with the Quakers. His teams produced more than 70 in six other games. Penn is 5-2 when scoring 70 or more points under Knapp. The Quakers defeated Lehigh by one point on Nov. 16. The Red and Blue have played in four one-point games under Knapp. Penn is 2-2 in those games. Averaging just less than 270 points a season, and holding 949 career points, senior tri-captain Joey Rhoads could be the 17th Quaker to eclipse 1,000 points. She has 144 points this season and needs just 51 more to reach the milestone. Lauren Pears missed the majority of the 2005?06 season with a knee injury, but started all eight games and ranked among the team leaders in every statistical category prior to her injury. She is back on track as the team leader in assists (30), second in rebounds (34) and third in points (52). Monica Naltner was named the Ivy League Player the of Week, Nov. 20. It was her first such honor. She earned co-player of the week honors from the Ivy League and outright honors from the Big 5 on Dec. 11. Penn has just two juniors on the roster this season?guards
Kimberly Franklin and Brilynne Parrish. Franklin clocked an average of 19 minutes last season and took the ball to the basket for 78 points. Parrish played in 15 games last season and pulled down 26 rebounds with her aggressive play. The Quakers welcome back a large six-member sophomore class. Two have broken into the starting line-up this season?

Maggie Burgess. Penn's off-the-bench players have been almost exclusively sophomores. Burgess is third on the team in rebounds averaging 4.1 a game. A new addition to that class is transfer
Sarah Bucar. Though she will practice with the team, Bucar will not compete during the 2006?07 season in compliance with NCAA regulations. Initially recruited by Coach Knapp at Georgetown, Bucar opted to attend West Virginia after Knapp left Georgetown. After averaging 14.1 minutes a game as back-up to WVU's Ashley Powell?one of the nation's top freshmen last season?Bucar will take a season to learn Penn's system and become a game contributor in the 2007?08 season. Hailing from the far stretches of the country, Penn welcomes this year's freshmen?
Amy Donovan (Battle Ground, Wash.),
Carolyn Miller (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.),
Caitlin Slover (Southampton, Pa.) and Rachel Williams (Miami, Fla.). Donovan was the first freshman to see any minutes this season. She debuted against Lehigh, Nov. 16 and had one steal against Delaware, Nov. 29. Slover has seen significant playing time since her debut against Delaware, Nov. 29. She is currently averaging 11 minutes per game.
Scouting Temple...
Nicole Pittman only had two points in the entire game but she made them count, as the junior's lay-up with 1.1 seconds remaining gave Temple a 68-66 win over Villanova, Dec. 22. Hairston leads Temple in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double of 20.9 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Comfort is second with 13.1 ppg and Fatima Maddox is third, averaging 13 ppg. Freshmen Jasmine Stone and Eaddy continue to put up great numbers, with Stone second in rebounding (6.0rpg) and Eaddy first in assists (45). Tonight is Temple's second Big Five match-up of the year and the Owls are 1-0 after edging Villanova, 68-66, on Dec. 22. The Quakers are 0-2 in city play after dropping games to La Salle and Villanova.
