Columbia, S.C. ? The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team dropped their first game of the season on Sunday, losing to the College of Charleston, 3-1, on the final day of the adidas/South Carolina Gamecock Classic.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Quakers (4-1) while the Cougars (4-4-1) won for the first time in four games.
Charleston scored less than two minutes into the game when Darren Toby headed a ball home off a corner kick. The Cougars added another 10 minutes later when Matt Morris scored from a Wes Knight assist. Penn freshman Andrew Ferry scored the lone goal for Penn just 18 seconds to halftime off a corner kick, but it was the last time the Quakers would find net.
Jeremy Gold added the insurance goal for the Cougars off a one-on-one situation with junior goalkeeper Daniel Cepero in the 62nd minute.
Cepero made a season-high eight saves in facing 14 shots. A trio of Cougar goalkeepers combined for three saves off eight Quaker shots. Charleston held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Penn returns to action on Sept. 24 when they take on rival Drexel at 2 p.m. on Vidas Field.
