John Ceralde, the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics head coach, has announced the addition of a new assistant coach for the program, Tom Elder, for the start of the 2020 season.

Elder joins Penn’s staff in preparation for the 2020 season with experience as the men’s gymnastics coach at Philadelphia Boys Gymnastics, where he builds and arranges competition schedules, instructs gymnasts and develops them for competition in USAG Junior Olympic events.

As PBG, Elder also serves as the Assistant Director of the Parents Association, working as a liaison between the gym’s manager and the parents to review strategy, progress and the training and competition schedules. Within that role, he also oversees the overall program’s development when it comes to equipment quality, recruiting and social media development.

Since 2014, Elder also holds the role of Director of Men’s Gymnastics and of the Junior Counselor Program at Camp Woodward.

Elder graduated from the University of Akron with a Bachelor’s in Philosophy in 2018 and is completing coursework towards a Masters of Bioethics at Penn.
