On the plaque: After a year playing at the University of Kansas, he made the move to Penn to study for a medical degree and lettered from 1897-99, earning captain status in 1898. Walter Camp named him All-America at tackle in 1897 and All-America at halfback the following year. In 1946, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) initiated the Outland Trophy, named in his honor, to be given to the nation’s best interior lineman at the college level.
