PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team hosted West Virginia and Drexel for the three-day Penn Invitational, competing in singles and doubles action from Friday through Sunday at the Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Centers.
The Quakers collected wins throughout the weekend, with several players earning victories in both singles and doubles play. The weekend also featured first collegiate wins for Cookie Jarvis-Tredgett in singles and Peien Deng in both doubles and singles.
Day One
Singles – Round One
Penn opened the Penn Invitational with singles competition against West Virginia and Drexel.
Athina Schlepphorst defeated West Virginia's Lucia Tognoni, 6-4, 6-1. Sasha Motlagh followed with a three-set victory over WVU's Lyla Byers, coming back after dropping the first set to win 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10).
Emma Tomova and Liza Tkachenko each earned straight-set victories against the Mountaineers, with Tomova defeating Sosanna Malaak, 6-1, 6-1, and Tkachenko topping Daniela Gonzales, 6-2, 6-1.
First-year Cookie Jarvis-Tredgett earned her first collegiate singles victory, battling back after dropping the opening set to defeat Drexel's Anastasia Kavounov, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8).
Singles – Round Two
Lara Stojanovski picked her first victory of the weekend over the Dragon's Isabella De Micco Padula, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Tomova and Tkachenko also earned victories against Drexel, with Tomova defeating Joanne Hartono, 6-2, 6-3, and Tkachenko sweeping Ely Laure A-Sou, 6-0, 6-0.
Doubles
Penn also earned two doubles victories against Drexel. Joleen Saw and Schlepphorst defeated Hartono and Sogomonyan, 7-6 (6), while Tkachenko and Tomova topped A-Sou and Ibrahim, 6-2.
Day Two
Doubles – Round One
Penn began the second day with doubles competition against West Virginia and Drexel.
West Virginia's Villanueva Morillo and Tognoni defeated Deng and Tomova, 7-5, while Byers and Maeda topped Schlepphorst and Motlagh, 7-5. Gonzalez and Malaak also earned a 6-2 victory over Jarvis-Tredgett and Vedula.
Tkachenko and Stojanovski earned Penn's only win of the round over Drexel's Kavounov and De Micco Padula, 6-1.
Doubles – Round Two
Deng and Tkachenko earned a 6-1 victory over Drexel's Ibrahim and Chowgule, giving Deng her first collegiate doubles win.
Stojanovski and Schlepphorst also earned a doubles victory, edging West Virginia's Gonzalez and Malaak, 7-6 (8), while Vedula and Saw defeated Drexel's A-Sou and Ratobylskaya, 6-1.
Singles
Stojanovski picked up a win over WVU's Tognoni, 2-6, 4-3, before Tognoni retired due to injury. Saw defeated Drexel's Sogomonyan, 6-2, 6-1, while Tkachenko topped Hartono, 6-3, 6-1. Vedula added a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Drexel's Chowgule.
Jarvis-Tredgett continued her weekend with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Drexel's Bia Ibrahim.
Day Three
Doubles
Penn opened the final day with three doubles victories against Drexel. Stojanovski and Tomova defeated De Micco Padula and Kavounov, 6-4, while Saw and Deng topped Sogomonyan and Ibrahim, 6-1. Tkachenko and Schlepphorst completed the doubles results with a 6-0 victory over Chowgule and A-Sou.
Singles
Saw earned a straight-set victory over De Micco Padula, 6-4, 6-1, while Jarvis-Tredgett defeated Sogomonyan, 6-4, 7-5.
Deng earned her first collegiate singles victory against Drexel's Kavounov. After dropping the opening set, 3-6, Deng took the second set, 6-3, before winning the deciding 10-point tiebreaker, 11-9. Kavounov held a nine points in the tiebreaker before Deng won the final three points to secure the victory.
Tomova, Tkachenko, and Vedula each added straight-set victories to close out the weekend, with Tomova defeating Ibrahim, 6-0, 6-1, Tkachenko topping Chowgule, 6-1, 6-0, and Vedula defeating Ratobylskaya, 6-2, 6-0.
The Penn Invitational gave the Quakers three days of competition at home against West Virginia and Drexel. Jarvis-Tredgett earned her first collegiate singles victory on the opening day, while Deng collected her first collegiate doubles victory on Day Two before earning her first collegiate singles win on the final day.
