Coyne and Spaventa Named Ivy League Pitcher and Player of the Week

PHILADELPHIA Juniors Marty Coyne and Nick Spaventa were selected as the Ivy League's Pitcher and Player of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced.

Coyne has been one of Penn's three main starters this season, but on Saturday, he dominated out of the bullpen in the first matchup of the day. The junior threw 6.1 scoreless innings against Columbia and did not allow a hit over that stretch. Coyne retired 19 of the Lions' final 20 batters in Game 2 to send the Quakers to a rubber match in the series finale. He also notched four strikeouts and didn't issue a walk across 69 pitches.

The Hockessin, Del. native holds the second-best ERA in the Ivy League (2.55), while limiting opposing batters to a .203 batting average (fourth in IL).

Spaventa had a huge week at the plate for the Red and Blue across their four games. The first baseman started the week with two hits and three RBIs in the Quakers' 10-5 win at Delaware State before their three-game set in New York. Over the series with the Lions, Spaventa registered a home run in every game, finishing with four hits, five RBIs and five runs scored. The Pitman, N.J. native has established himself as one of the top sluggers in the Ivy League, leading the conference with six home runs.

The Red and Blue return to Liberty Bell Classic play on Tuesday against Lafayette before hosting Cornell for three games over the weekend.
