PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team began the season with two 4-0 shutouts over Villanova and Saint Joseph's at the Hecht Tennis Center.
 
The doubles pairing of Esha Velaga and Maya Urata kicked off the spring season with a 6-3 victory against Gehrig and Callahan of Villanova.
 
Liza Tkachenko and Joleen Saw followed with a 6-4 win for the Red and Blue, as Penn took the first two doubles matches.
 
Velaga, Lara Stojanovski and Saw all earned singles victories against Villanova as the Quakers emerged victorious with a 4-0 shutout against the Wildcats.
 
In the second match, Velaga and Urata paired up again to win their second doubles match of the day, defeating Czerny and Tracey of Saint Joseph's.
 
Varsha Vedula and Stojanovski defeated Casusol and O'Brien in their doubles match as the Quakers took two out of three.
 
Velaga scored another singles victory against the Hawks as she defeated Czerny (6-1, 6-1).
 
Stojanovski added an additional singles win for the Quakers as she defeated Casusol (6-2, 6-1), ultimately giving the Quakers another 4-0 victory against Saint Joseph's.
