Women's Basketball Falls to Brown in Double Overtime Battle, 77-65

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team fell to Brown in a double overtime battle, 77-65.

Penn never held a lead in regulation and was down by as much as 12 early in Saturday's contest at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Quakers came all the way back to tie it with just 22 seconds left in regulation, the game's first tie since 0-0. Penn then held two leads in the first overtime before the host Bears tied it late in the period. The Red and Blue ran out of gas in the second extra session as Brown outscored them, 16-4.

Penn fell to 10-5 on the season and is now 0-2 in Ivy League play, while Brown improved to 10-4 and stayed unbeaten in the Ivies at 2-0.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn recorded eight steals and forced 18 Brown turnovers, converting them into 15 points.

*Junior Mataya Gayle led the Quakers in scoring with 18 points.

*Sophomore Katie Collins recorded her second double-double in the last four games, with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

*Seniors Simone Sawyer (10 points) and Saniah Caldwell (16) also scored in double figures for the Red and Blue.

*Three players logged over forty minutes for the Quakers on Saturday: Gayle (49), Collins (48), and Caldwell (43).

*Brown's Grace Arnolie led all scorers with 24 points.

How It Happened
The Quakers struggled to hit shots early on, missing their first five field goal attempts, and Brown capitalized in jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Gayle finally got the Quakers on the board with a driving layup off a steal. In fact, it was Gayle who scored all seven Penn points in the quarter, as the Bears led by as many as 12 early and still held a 16-7 advantage after one.

Penn immediately opened up the second quarter with a three-pointer from Brooke Suttle off an assist from Ashna Tambe as the Quakers looked to build any sort of momentum. After another scoring drought, the Quakers closed in on the lead before halftime, scoring eight points in a 1:13 span late in the period to get within 28-24 at the break.

Brown scored the first four points in the third quarter, but Caldwell drained a trey and Tina Njike scored to get the Quakers going. An Njike steal then led to a Collins layup at the other end, and Penn was within one at 32-31 with 6:33 left in the quarter. The Red and Blue went cold for nearly four minutes after that, though, and Brown took advantage with a 7-0 run to regain some separation. Bruno's lead was five after three, 41-36.

That lead held through the early part of the fourth and was still a seven-point margin (46-39) with just six minutes left. Back-to-back triples from Caldwell and Sawyer about a minute apart got Penn within one, at 46-45, but Brown scored four of the next five points and still led 50-46 as the clock went under two minutes. However, Sawyer scored off a Gayle feed and then Gayle got into the paint for a layup that tied things up at 50-50 with 22 seconds left. Both teams failed to convert on their last shot opportunities and the game went into overtime.

Olivia Young opened the scoring just 16 second into the extra session but Caldwell quickly responded with a three-pointer that, amazingly, gave Penn its first lead of the day at 53-52. Arnolie responded with a three-pointer for Brown, and then Suttle drew a foul on Brown forward Alyssa Moreland but had to be subbed out of the game. Gabriella Kelley came in and calmly knocked down both free throws, tying the game at 55. The Bears scored the next four points as Penn went scoreless for more than two minutes, but in another back-and-forth turn of events Gayle knocked down a triple, Suttle hit one of two foul shots, and Gayle knocked down a pair of free throws. The six points came in a span of 32 seconds and put Penn in front 61-59 with the clock under a minute. Brown worked the shot clock down and Arnolie found Moreland for a layup with 24 seconds left that tied things up, and Sawyer's three-pointer at the buzzer was blocked by Young to send this game to a second OT.

Neither team scored in the first minute of the second extra session, but Beth Nelson hit a triple and that set Brown off on an 8-0 run as Penn went nearly three minutes without scoring. Collins finally hit a pair of free throws with 2:10 left but the wind was out of the Quakers' sails. Collins would convert the team's only field goal of the period with 36 seconds left as the Bears outscored the Quakers in the OT, 16-4.
