How It Happened
SET 1 (25-22): The first set was the most dramatic, the teams tying six times and changing the lead twice. The last tie came at 15-15 but then SPU committed a service error and an attack error and that gave Penn an advantage they wouldn't give up. Rittenberg put down a kill to make it 18-15 and the teams traded several points after that until a pair of Saint Peter's aces got the Peacocks within 22-21. Penn coach
Tyler Hagstrom called a timeout, and the timeout froze the SPU server as she served an error out of the stoppage. The Peacocks got that point back, making it 23-22, but Rittenberg and then Garner put down kills and that ended matters. Sanger had five kills in the set, while Rittenberg and Garner finished with three each and Pollock came up with nine digs.
SET 2 (25-16): The teams tied the first two points, but an SPU service error was followed by a Sanger kill to make the score 3-1 and Penn never looked back. The Peacocks were within a point at 9-8, but another service error set the Quakers on a seven-point run that featured two Sanger kills, two Garner service aces, and a block by Kerstetter and Rittenberg. That made it 16-8 and the teams essentially traded points the rest of the way. Sanger hit .667 in the set, with six kills on nine attacks without an error, while Siskin had three kills and hit .400.
SET 3 (25-18): Sanger put down a kill for the first point, SPU had an attack error on the next point, and the Quakers were on their way. Kerstetter bookended a five-point run with kills, pushing Penn's lead to 11-5, then joined Siskin on a block that started another five-point run to get the margin to double digits at 17-7. To its credit, Saint Peter's rallied—the Peacocks used a 7-1 run to get back within four, at 20-16. However, kills by Garner and Kerstetter slowed SPU's momentum and Penn scored three of the last four points in the set to close out the match. Sanger hit .800 in the set, with four kills on five attacks, while Kerstetter had four kills and Siskin added three.
