Women's Rowing Completes First Day of Racing at NCAA Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team will have all three boats row in the C/D semifinals on Saturday after Friday's racing at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The three-day national championship event is taking place at Mercer Lake.

All three of Penn's boats are seeded 15th in their respective 22-boat field and can still beat their seeds depending on results Saturday and Sunday.

"We raced well today, with aggressiveness and determination," said Penn's first-year head coach, Bill Manning. "I'm very pleased with how all three boats challenged themselves and put forth a good effort. Our placement was as it has been this season—we defeated the crews we have beaten previously but didn't overtake the fastest ones. The opportunity now is to advance tomorrow and then exceed our seed in Sunday's finals."

Friday Results
Varsity Eight
Penn went out to a fast start and was third at the 500-meter mark. The Quakers were still within a second of Indiana for third place at the race's midpoint, but the Hoosiers opened things up in the third 500 on the way to a third-place finish. Yale led wire-to-wire and took first by nearly three seconds over Texas.
  (7) Yale 6:12.632
  (2) Texas 6:15.396
  (10) Indiana 6:18.701
  (15) Penn 6:26.262
  (18) Oregon State 6:30.119

Second Varsity Eight
The top three boats established themselves early in this race, leaving Penn and Oregon State to battle for fourth place. The Quakers' lead over the Beavers fluctuated between one and two seconds most of the race, with an ultimate margin of 1.6 seconds.
  (2) Washington 6:18.700
  (10) Virginia 6:20.845
  (7) Brown 6:22.905
  (15) Penn 6:34.792
  (18) Oregon State 6:36.405

Varsity Four
The Quakers went out fast here, and it might have cost them in the end. Penn was in second place at the race's midpoint, behind only second-seeded Washington, but Princeton and Brown overtook the Red and Blue in the third 500 and then Oregon State ran them down in the final 500 and nipped them for fourth place by three-tenths of a second.
  (2) Washington 7:11.573
  (10) Princeton 7:14.789
  (7) Brown 7:15.728
  (18) Oregon State 7:20.369
  (15) Penn 7:20.674
