How It Happened
Yale took control early in Saturday's game, building up a three-goal lead that they never relinquished.
Ben Smith got Penn on the board in an extra-man situation with 3:04 left in the opening quarter, off a Walsh feed, but the Bulldogs responded less than a minute later and held a 4-1 lead after one.
Yale made it 5-1 less than a minute into the second, but the Quakers took advantage of some Yale penalties and scored three times in a span of 1:43 to get within one. Scane scored twice in the run, both of his goals assisted by Walsh and sandwiched around a
Travis Smith tally off a Rubin feed.
The final minute of the half proved to be Penn's undoing. Yale led, 6-4, then scored three times in the final 58 seconds including Hunter Bowen converting with the long pole. That pushed Eli to a 9-4 lead at the break.
Penn was playing catch-up the rest of the way. Scane scored early in the third, only for Yale to answer with two in a 2:21 span. Then Scane and
Ben Smith scored 1:21 apart but that was all the Quakers could muster the rest of the period. Yale's lead was 11-7 after three.
The Bulldogs scored quickly in the fourth, only for Patterson to answer. However, the Quakers went scoreless for nearly 11 minutes after that, and while they scored three times in the final 2:32 it was too little, too late.
