PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team closed the book on both its non-conference and home slate at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, slugging its way to a 12-2 victory over Wagner in seven innings.
The Quakers (20-16) have officially won 20 games for the fourth season in a row and for the fifth full season dating back to 2019 while the Seahawks fall to 23-18.
Quaker Notemeal
*Penn improves to 6-1 all-time against Wagner, having won four consecutive games since the series renewed back in 2022.
*
Jarrett Pokrovsky put his name into the record books with his 22nd double of the 2025 campaign, tying the Ivy League and Penn single-season record held by Tom Grandieri in 2010. He has at least one double in three straight games and five of his last six. During the six-game span, Pokrovsky has eight two-baggers.
*
Davis Baker didn't double (currently two shy of tying
Wyatt Henseler's career program-record of 50), but hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season on Wednesday. He also has a team-best 36 RBIs after totaling three more against Wagner.
*
John Yurkow won his 247th career game as Penn head coach on Wednesday, three shy of becoming just the third coach in program history to reach the 250-win milestone. He's behind just Walter Cariss (309 from 1920-43) and Bob Seddon (634 from 1971-2005) in all-time wins.
*No multi-hit games for Penn hitting on Wednesday, but six players tallied at least one knock.
*The Quakers drew six walks as a team with two each for
Connor Chavez and
Connor McCabe and were hit five times by Wagner pitching with two for Baker.
*
Ryan Taylor stole two bases on Wednesday, upping his season total to 17, tied for the fifth-most in a single season in program history. The record of 25 is held by Doug Glanville in 1989. Taylor is also ranked fifth all-time in career stolen bases at 39. He has the most steals in a career since Glenn Ambrosius (1997-00).
*Sophomore
Anthoni Kiafoulis (1-0) recorded his first-career win on Wednesday, tossing two scoreless innings of relief without allowing a base hit, striking out two with one walk surrendered.
*Penn's defense turned four double plays against the Seahawks' offense, a season-high total.
How It Happened
It looked as if the Quakers were in for a long game when the Wagner bats came up to the plate for the first time in the opening inning, starting with a hit by pitch and a single, scoring the game's first run on an RBI knock to take an early 1-0 lead.
Aidan von Zuben avoided trouble by stranding three runners on base.
After the Seahawks tacked a second run on in the top of the second, the Quakers responded with a
Qwynn Ahearn sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
Chavez drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third inning and scored when Baker smacked a towering two-run shot to right field to give Penn a 3-2 lead. The lead became 4-2 when
Ryan Taylor scored on a wild pitch at the end of the inning.
Wagner pitching had a wild fourth, going hit by pitch, wild pitch, walk, wild pitch, walk, and hit by pitch—which scored Ahearn—to lead off the stanza. A two-run double for Pokrovsky—which tied the Ivy League and program single-season mark—extended Penn's edge to 7-2.
Penn put a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the sixth with five runs on four hits and an error, headlined by RBI knocks for Taylor (double), Spaventa (single), Degnan (double), and Ahearn (single) to make the lead 10 at 12-2.
Tommy Delany continued to pitch in the top of the seventh, now with the run rule in effect, when he gave up a leadoff double. A 5-4-3 double play ended the outing with the Quakers on top, 12-2.
