How It Happened
The Bears came to play to open the top 20 battle, adding two goals to the board within the first seven minutes of the game to lead by a pair early. Brown's defense remained strong, keeping the Quakers off the board the entire first period. The Bears added another to the board in the final two minutes of the quarter to lead 3-0 after the first 15 minutes.
The Quakers opened the second with a point to prove, knocking in back-to-back free position shots from Brandt and Columbia-Walsh to cut the deficit to a goal with 10:38 left of the first half. Not even a minute later,
Keeley Block lobbed a shot to Smith to allow Penn to even the game at three.
Junior Columbia-Walsh continued the run for the Quakers, adding their fourth unanswered goal to the board to push Penn ahead 4-3 with 8:25 left of the period. The lead was shortly lived for the Red and Blue, as Brown tied the contest at four two minutes later.
Looking to make another statement, senior Smith nailed her second of the day off a sole shot to put Penn ahead 5-4 with five minutes left. With 1:47 on the clock, the Bears tied the battle again, but midfielder Brandt made a statement to close the first half, netting the 200th point of her career, to push the Quakers ahead 6-5 to end the second.
Both offenses were quiet to open the second half, with the pair of teams being held off the board until the 5:33 mark when
Catherine Berkery scored to extend Penn's lead to two goals. The defenses continued to hold up as the sophomore's goal would be the sole one scored in the third to keep the game at 7-5 heading into the fourth.
Midfielder Smith opened the final period of regulation, netting her second hat trick of the year to lengthen the deficit to three goals. Brown finally scored its first goal of the second half with 11:50 remaining to cut the lead to 8-6. Luckily, senior Brandt recorded her third goal of the outing three minutes later to bump the hole to three again. With a little over five minutes left, sophomore
Eden Welch scored her first of the outing to create a four-goal cushion.
Brown tried to muster a comeback with 2:35 remaining, cutting the lead to three goals, but Columbia-Walsh completed her hat trick in the final minute to push Penn to victory at 11-7.
