Heavyweights Vie For Childs Cup Saturday in North Jersey

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team gets back into racing form on Saturday, making the trip to Overpeck Park to face host Columbia and Princeton. The Childs Cup will be on the line in the Varsity Eights race.

Princeton leads the Childs Cup standings, with 54 victories—compared to Penn's 44 wins and Columbia's 12—and have captured all but one of the races dating back to 1994 (Columbia breaking the run with a win in 2009). That includes a six-second victory over the second-place Quakers last year on Lake Carnegie. Penn's last victory came in 1993 on the Schuylkill.

In the Week 1 IRCA/IRA national poll, released Wednesday, Princeton's Varsity Eight was ranked fifth while Penn was ranked tenth and Columbia was ranked 16th.

Childs Cup History
In 1879, George W. Childs, owner and publisher of the Philadelphia Public Ledger, presented a challenge cup for rowing competition in four-oared races to Columbia, Princeton and Penn. One of Penn's first intercollegiate races, the Childs Cup, was won by the Quakers that year. In 1889, the Childs Cup was changed to an eight-oared event. Cornell, Navy and California have been invited to participate in the Cup race.
