Quaker Notemeal
Top-ranked Penn enters the tournament with a perfect regular-season record, a feat only achieved once before in the last ten years. In their last outing against No. 6 Drexel, the Quakers swept the Dragons, 9-0. Four of the nine wins in the rout were three-game sweeps, achieved by Nick Spizzirri, Omar Hafez, Nathan Kueh, and Roger Baddour.
Of their regular starting nine, the Red and Blue have four athletes who have remained undefeated in team competition this season. Salman Khalil (No. 1 normally), Marwan Abdelsalam (normally No. 4), Nathan Kueh (normally No. 5), and Varun Chitturi (normally No. 8) have remained undefeated in team competition through at least 11 matches, going 13-0, 11-0, 15-0, and 13-0 respectively.
Previewing the Lions
No. 8 Columbia enters the tournament with a 6-7 overall record on the season, finishing fifth in the Ivy League standings. Meeting earlier this season in conference play, Penn swept Columbia, 9-0 in the Penn Squash Center. Following their matchup against the Quakers, the Lions dropped four of their six remaining matches. One of their two wins came against No. 9 Cornell, where the Lions edged out the Big Red, 5-4 in Ithaca, N.Y.
Since 2020, the Quakers have owned this matchup, winning in all six of their meetings. Should the Lions make it to the next round, they would be seeking their first win over the Red and Blue since 2019.
Previewing the Big Red
No. 9 Cornell enters the tournament with a 6-8 overall record on the season, finishing sixth in the Ivy League standings. Meeting earlier this season in conference play, Penn swept Cornell, 9-0 in the Penn Squash Center. Following their matchup against the Quakers, the Big Red dropped four of their five remaining matches. The Cornell vs. Columbia matchup has historically favored the Lions, who have won eight of their last ten meetings since 2016. Despite their past dominance, Columbia's last match against Cornell was significantly more competitive, with Columbia winning, 5-4.
Since 2017, Penn has dominated Cornell, winning all eight of their meetings and scoring at least seven points in each one. Should the Big Red make it to the quarterfinals round, they would be seeking their first win over the Quakers since 2016.
