Dartmouth Captures Both Ends of Doubleheader, Takes Series Against Baseball

HANOVER, N.H. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team was looking to continue its unblemished start to Ivy League play, but Dartmouth had other plans in taking two from Penn Friday afternoon at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.

The Quakers (8-12, 3-2 Ivy) fell 8-7, 5-2 to the Big Green (2-13, 2-3 Ivy) who won their first two games of the 2025 season on Friday.

Quaker Notemeal
*Dartmouth claims a series against Penn for the first time since 2012. That year, the Big Green won both games in Hanover.

*After hitting three doubles on Tuesday against Saint Joseph's, Davis Baker had a double in his first two plate appearances in Game 1 Friday at Dartmouth. He added an extra-base hit—an inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning—to finish off his 3-for-6 performance.

*The inside-the-parker was Penn's first since Andrew Murnane had one at Harvard on April 7, 2018.

*Baker's first hit of the day was the 150th of his career, becoming the latest Quaker to join the 150-hit club.

*Freshman Ernie Echevarria also had a three-hit day in Game 1, going 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

*Jarrett Pokrovsky drove in a couple runs, going 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly.

*Noah Millikan (0-2) was charged with the loss, his second of the year. He allowed six runs (all earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts over four innings. Tommy Delany and Marty Coyne combined to allow two runs on four hits over four innings of relief, while the former had two Ks.

*For the most part, it was a struggle for the Penn offense in Game 2, recording just two runs on seven hits. Both Gavin Collins (2-for-4) and Jarrett Pokrovsky (2-for-4) had multi-hit games while Baker and Pokrovsky drove in the only runs in the game.

*Pokrovsky hit his third homer of the season in the sixth inning to cut the Dartmouth lead in half.

*Baker's lone hit was a double, his third of the day and sixth of the week. He now leads the team and the Ivy League with 11 two-baggers.

*Sebastian Haggard (2-1) picked up his first loss of the year after giving up four runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked none. Josh Katz picked up his slack and shoved with 4.1 stellar innings out of the bullpen. He allowed one unearned run while scattering four hits, punching out five and walking three Dartmouth batters.

How It Happened (Game 1)
Davis Baker recorded his fourth double in two games to lead off the opener, scoring Penn's first run on Jarrett Pokrovsky's sacrifice fly.

Penn starter Noah Millikan experienced some early trouble, allowing a leadoff walk and then a single to put two runners on. Ethan Brown's two-run double gave the Big Green a 2-1 lead. A triple to left center field brought home Brown to make it a 3-1 lead.

Baker recorded yet another double in the third inning, coming across to score on Pokrovsky's RBI infield single, cutting into the Big Green's 3-2 lead.

Millikan got an early out in the third on Elliot Krewson's groundout to second base, but Brown came through with another RBI knock, a solo homer to left field to make it a 4-2 game. He allowed two more runs to score in the fourth as Dartmouth extended its edge to 6-2.

Baker's third hit of the ballgame turned out to be of the inside-the-park home run variety that caromed off the right center field screen and rolled into the outfield, allowing the shortstop to round all three bases. That cut the Big Green lead in half at 6-3. The Quakers tacked on two more runs in the frame by way of Collins' sac-fly and an RBI single for Echevarria, getting closer at 6-5. Tommy Delany threw a scoreless fifth inning and the Penn offense had just one hit and left two on in the sixth. Delany allowed a single to lead off the sixth but got Puig to ground into a 6-3 double play.

Penn wasted a two-runner with two out opportunity when Ahearn flew out to end the seventh inning.

Delany surrendered a leadoff double to begin the Big Green half of the seventh and was immediately replaced by Coyne. Dartmouth scored two more runs and led 8-5 heading into the eighth.

Coyne pitched a solid eighth inning to keep the Big Green out of the run column and send the contest to the ninth.

Pokrovsky flew out to begin the ninth inning, but a walk to Collins and a single for Echevarria put runners on first and second with one out. Ahearn walked to load the bases with two outs as back-to-back walks to McGonigal and Chavez cut the Dartmouth lead to 8-7. With the bases juiced and two away, Baker flew out to right field to end the threat.

How It Happened (Game 2)
Penn left two runners on base after three hits to begin the first, but Dartmouth got after Sebastian Haggard early with a single and a two-run homer to take an early 2-0 lead.

Haggard seemed to settle in between the second and third innings, retiring seven consecutive Big Green hitters, registering four strikeouts.

The game unraveled for Haggard in the fourth inning after giving up a leadoff solo home run, then back-to-back hits and then an RBI single through the left side as Dartmouth surged ahead 4-0. Katz relieved him in the inning, which ended up being two runs on four hits with two left.

Penn got into the runs column in the fifth on Baker's RBI double to left center, trimming Dartmouth's lead to 4-1. The Big Green nearly extended their lead even further in the fifth inning when Katz gave up two singles, but ended up leaving the bases loaded to get out of the jam after he struck out the final batter swinging. In the sixth, the Quakers cut the Big Green lead in half at 4-2 on Pokrovsky's third homer of the year. Katz continued his dominant relief effort by retiring the Dartmouth side in both the sixth and seventh innings. After nothing worked offensively for the Quakers in he eighth, Katz got back to work and allowed his first run of the game on an error as the Big Green took a 5-2 lead into the ninth.

Penn went down 1-2-3 to end the game as Dartmouth swept the doubleheader and clinched the series victory.
