PHILADELPHIA— The No. 1 University of Pennsylvania men's squash team closed out their regular season schedule tonight with a sweep over No. 6 Drexel.
With their win tonight, the Quakers have completed their regular season schedule with a perfect record, only the second time they have hit that mark in the last ten years (2021-22). Tonight's result also marked their eleventh 9-0 win of the regular season, the most regular season wins by that margin in recent history.
The first wave of men made quick work of their opponents, all completing their matches in under an hour. Omar Hafez put the first point on the board, needing only 34 minutes to sweep Youssef Bastawy. Zane Patel finished a few minutes later, putting the Quakers up by two after a four-game bout with Tavneet Singh Mundra. Marwan Abdelsalam took game four over Yuri Pollak Pelbart after 50 minutes, and co-captain Abdelrahman Dweek maintained the team's clean sheet in game four after 58 minutes.
The second wave picked up where the first wave left off. Co-captain Roger Baddour needed only 30 minutes to clinch the match for the Red and Blue with a three-game sweep over Shomari Wiltshire. Nathan Kueh, the program's all-time wins leader, added to his record with a victory over Dumitru Goian. Kueh also maintained his perfect individual record, now 15-0 on the season.
Nick Spizzirri finished next, sweeping Guido Lindner in 48 minutes. The longest match of the night was the battle between Dana Santry and Sean Murphy. Both of similar build and playing style, the two battled tactfully for over an hour. Alternating wins, Santry was able to capitalize in game five, maintaining the team's perfect record on the night and improving the score to 8-0. Both sides then gathered around the final match between Varun Chitturi and Darien Benn.
Chitturi jumped to an early lead, taking games one and two handily over Benn. Falling behind, Benn led Chitturi in game three 7-6 before requiring an injury timeout to cover a wound on his knee. Benn finished the job and took game three upon his return, but ran out of steam in game four. Chitturi completed the match around 9:30 p.m., completing the sweep and the regular season.
