How It Happened
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, the teams changing leads four times and tying six. Neither team had a longer run than Penn's 6-0 streak that pushed the Quakers from down 18-14 to up 20-18. Hofstra scored to tie it, only for the Red and Blue to get buckets from Roberts and
Cam Thrower. Overall, it was a 10-2 run that made the score 24-20. The advantage was as large as six, a Scantlebury bucket making it 32-26, but Hofstra scored five of the last six point and Penn's lead was 33-31 at the break.
The Pride jumped out quickly in the second half. Plotnikov drained a three on the opening possession and then Onuetu hit a hook shot in the paint. Power answered with a triple that tied the game at 36-36, but Patterson answered from distance and then Edmead added a pair of free throws. Power again scored, making the score 41-38, but Plotnikov sandwiched a pair of buckets around two Patterson free throws and then A.J. Wills got in on the fun with another basket. Overall, it was an 18-5 run over less than six minutes and it left Hofstra ahead by a double-digit margin at 49-38.
Penn couldn't make up the deficit. The Quakers only got the margin back to single digits twice, at 49-40 on a Roberts floater and at 51-42 on a pair of Scantlebury free throws with 12:45 to play. But Hofstra scored the next four points after that and never looked back.
