PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania squash teams swept Cornell, 9-0, on Saturday at the Penn Squash Center in a rescheduled contest. The matches were originally scheduled to take place on Sunday in Ithica, N.Y.
The top-ranked Penn men remain undefeated at 13-0 and are now 3-0 in Ivy League play. The No. 4 women's squad are also 3-0 in Ivy play and improve to 10-1 on the season.
The men made swift work of the No. 9 Big Red, dropping just one game across their nine matches.
Abdelrahman Dweek set the tone at No. 6, earning the Quakers their first point of the afternoon.
Varun Chitturi at No. 7 was the only player who needed to go an extra set, but after splitting his first two games he won Game 3, 11-5, and Game 4, 11-4.
The women's matched the men's 9-0 scoreline, but their match was a far more tightly contested affair. Malak Khafagy and Yee Xin Ying's match in the No. 1 spot demonstrated why they are two of the best players in the conference; their match went five games, with none of them being decided by less than three points.
At No. 2, Franka Vidovic took a blow to the face by Aishwarya Khubchandani in the third set but rallied back from down 2-1 to take the final two sets in commanding fashion. Jana Dweek (#6) also needed five games to finish off her opponent, winning the fifth 11-6. Three other matches went four games, with only Sohaila Ismail (#3) and Natasha Pensler (#9) winning in straight games on Saturday.
