PHILADELPHIA – Right-hander
Eli Trop became the second player from the University of Pennsylvania baseball team to be drafted this week, picked in the 16th round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Trop joins
Jackson Appel in the draft class, after the catcher was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the sixth round on Monday. He's the 25th different Penn player to be drafted in program history.
The Seattle, Wash. native had a strong three seasons with the Quakers, leading the bullpen the last two years as the team won back-to-back Ivy League Tournament titles and went to the NCAA regional in both seasons. Trop made 21 appearances out of the bullpen in 2024, going 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA. He struck out 32 batters and walked just 15.
In 2023, Trop was unblemished with a record of 4-0 with a 2.37 ERA in 17 outings, striking out 36 with 12 walks. Prior to the start of this season, he was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List alongside teammate
Carson Ozmer.
From 2022-24, Trop put together a record of 7-2 with a career ERA of 3.07 in 48 appearances, totaling 82 strikeouts and 33 walks over 55.2 innings. He held batters to a career batting average of .179.
