MLAX Battles #2 Princeton in ILT Final on Sunday

ITHACA, N.Y. – After a gutsy win over top-seeded Cornell on Friday night, the fourth-seeded University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team will battle #2 Princeton for the Ivy League Tournament title on Sunday, May 3, at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out
*#16 Penn made lightning strike twice on Friday night, knocking off Ivy League Tournament host and top seed Cornell 13-9 at Schoellkopf Field.
 
*Friday's win was the 16th-ranked Quakers' second over the seventh-ranked Big Red this season, adding to an 11-10 double-overtime win in the regular season. 
 
*Ben Smith led the way with three goals, while James ShipleyDavis Provost, and Connell Kumar all scored twice. Leo Hoffman had three points (2g/1a), and Tynan Walsh dished out a pair of assists. 
 
*At the other end, the Quakers' used a stout defense to hold the Big Red more than six goals below their season average as goalkeeper Emmet Carroll came up with a season-high 19 saves.
 
*Sophomore Ryan McLaughlin was dominant on free balls, scooping up a career-high five GBs against the Big Red.
 
*Defenseman Brendan Lavelle did his job in the battle, holding Cornell's CJ Kirst to only one point and six shots on goal, with the sole assist being a season-low for the senior attacker.
 
*Luke DiNola, Hoffman, Kumar, Provost, and Scane all scored their first postseason goals as Quakers.
 
All-Ivy Honors
*The Ivy League announced the 2024 All-Ivy honoree this past Wednesday, with six Quakers landing postseason nods.

*Carroll, Brendan Lavelle, and Cam Rubin led the charge, landing First Team All-Ivy. 

*Peter Blake, Shipley, and Till were named Second Team All-Ivy to even out the league honors.
 
*Rubin and Till garnered the Ivy recognition for the first time in their collegiate careers.
 
Leading the Ivies
*Keeper Carroll currently leads all Ivy League goalkeepers in saves per game, totaling 229 saves on the season and averaging 15.27 per game. The Rye, N.Y. native is also second among goalkeepers in save percentage (.593) and third in goals-against-average (10.42).

*Junior Walsh sits in the top ten of multiple offensive stats, holding fourth in assists per game (1.57) and eighth in points per game (3.36).

*FOGO Ethan Costanzo has been quick off the faceoff this season, scooping up 3.33 ground balls a contest to land eighth amongst the Ivies.

*Defender Lavelle cracked the top ten in caused turnovers per game, forcing opponents to cause 1.2 per contest.

*After a dominant performance in the X this year, sophomore Mac Eldridge is currently ninth among faceoff specialists in the conference with a .467 faceoff percentage.
 
The Series with Princeton
*The Tigers hold the all-time series record, leading by 21 wins at 47-20-1.
 
*The last time these teams met in the postseason, the Tigers took a 9-8 semifinal win during the 2023 season.
 
 *Princeton took the regular season contest back on April 20, winning 15-10 in Old Nassau.

*Last season, when the Ivy foes played each other twice, each team took a win from the series.

*The Tigers won the first matchup this season, taking Quakers' regular season closer 15-10 in Old Nassau.
 
*Underclassmen paced #13 Penn in the road battle as freshman Provost and sophomore Scane both scored their first collegiate hat tricks against Princeton.
 
*Junior Walsh led the offense with four points, lending a helping hand on three goals to record his fourth four-point outing of the year.
 
*Three other Quakers hit the back of Princeton's net, with Jame Shipley netting a pair and juniors DiNola and Walsh scoring once.
 
*FOGO Costanzo took every faceoff against the Tigers, winning 12 while scooping up a team-high seven ground balls.
 
*Defensemen Lavelle, McLaughlin, and Till each caused a pair of turnovers to lead the Red and Blue's defense.
 
Scouting the Tigers
*The second-seeded Tigers are coming off a 14-10 Ivy League semifinal win over #3 Yale.
 
*Chad Palumbo led the Tiger goal scorers in the tournament opener, netting five goals. Nate Kabiri dished out a team-leading four tallies.

*Andrew McMeekin went 20-28 in the X against the Bulldogs, scooping up a team-high 17 GBs as well.


*The Quakers will face Second Team All-Ivy goalkeeper Michael Gianforcaro, who has stopped 16 shots in the semifinal outing for Princeton.
