#13 MLAX Closes Out Regular Season Action at #17 Princeton on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – The nationally ranked University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team closes out the regular season on Saturday, April 20, with a 5 p.m. road battle at #17 Princeton.

Last Time Out

*#13 Penn had a successful Senior Day last Saturday at Franklin Field, completing a 15-12 comeback win over #15 Harvard to clinch a spot in the Ivy League Tournament. 

*Down at the half, 9-5, the Quakers netted seven unanswered goals to go up 12-9, then answered a three-goal Crimson run with a three-goal run of their own to clinch the victory. 


*The senior class put on a show, led by Cam Rubin, who tallied a season-high eight points, including his second six-goal performance of the season. Goalkeeper Emmet Carroll continued his hot play in the cage as he recorded a season-high 18 saves. Defenseman Brendan Lavelle scored his first collegiate goal from the defensive end of the field to close out the scoring. 


*Four other Quakers hit the back of the Crimson's net, with Tynan Walsh following Rubin with four goals, Ben Smith tallying a pair, and Griffin Scane and Luke DiNola scoring once each. Walsh and Scane recorded five-point outings, Scane's total a career-high tally.


Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week

*Keeper Carroll earned his third Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honor on Monday afternoon after his season-high 18 save outing against Harvard this past weekend. 

*The senior was a complete defensive force against the Crimson, causing a turnover and scooping up a ground ball to go along with his season-high tally.


Emmet Carroll Tewaaraton Nominee

*Senior Carroll was named a 2024 Tewaaraton Award nominee, announced by the foundation on Thursday afternoon.

*The keeper has been a force in the net for Penn this year, compiling 182 saves, a .601 save percentage, a 10.03 goals-against-average, 29 ground balls, and six caused turnovers thus far.


Leading the Ivies

*Keeper Carroll currently leads all Ivy League goalkeepers in saves per game, totaling 182 saves on the season and averaging 14.85 per game. The Rye, N.Y. native is also second among goalkeepers in save percentage (.601) and third in goals-against-average (10.03).
 
*Junior Walsh sits in the top ten of multiple offensive stats, holding seventh in assists per game (1.42) and ninth in points per game (3.42).


*Defender Lavelle cracked the top ten in caused turnovers per game, forcing opponents to cause 1.23 per contest.


*After a dominant performance in the X against the Crimson, sophomore Mac Eldridge is currently eighth among faceoff specialists in the conference with a .471 faceoff percentage.


The Series with Princeton

*The Tigers hold the all-time series record, leading by 20 wins at 46-20-1.

*These teams met twice during the 2023 campaign, with each program picking up a 9-8 win.


*The past ten matchups have been split evenly between both programs.


*The Quakers' last win in Old Nassau was a 14-7 contest during the 2018 season.


Last Time We Met

*Penn met Princeton in the semifinal round of the 2023 Ivy League men's lacrosse tournament, with the Tigers taking the 9-8 bout in the Big Apple.

*Senior Sam Handley led the Quakers' offense in the postseason battle with four points (2G, 2A). Attack Smith scored a team-high three goals to even out the offensive leaders in the tournament. 


*Carroll and Deven Varney both made appearances in the Red and Blue's net, with Carroll saving 16 shots in the game. 

 
Scouting the Tigers
*The Tigers are coming off a 13-12 loss to Brown last weekend that pushed them to 2-2 in Ivy League play.
 
*Princeton is still in contention for one of the final two spots in the 2024 Ivy League tournament. 
 
*Coulter Mackesy leads the team in points (44), goals (27), and assists (17).
 
*Andrew McMeekin has been consistent in the X for the Tigers, bringing a 122-234 record and team-leading 77 ground balls into Saturday's contest.
 
*The Quakers will likely face goalkeeper Michael Gianforcaro, who has stopped 138 shots so far this year, holding a .561 save percentage and 10.19 goals-against-average.
