Softball Comes Up Short Against Yale on Senior Day, Falls 6-3

PHILADELPHIA- The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped its series finale against Yale on Sunday afternoon, 6-3 at Penn Park.

Prior to the start of the game, the Quakers honored seven seniors: Dana Anderson, Brianna Brown, Sammy Fenton, Julia Mortimer, Katie Reagan, Olivia Szewczyk and Jillian Kuntze for Senior Day.

Despite tying the game in the bottom of the second with a solo home run from Mortimer, and a two-run bottom of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate, the Red and Blue fell short in their comeback attempt.

FINAL: Yale 6, Penn 3
In the top of the first, the Bulldogs had runners on first and second after a hit-by-pitch and a single. Willa Ferrer then split the gap in right field to bring in Libby Peoples as the first run of the game.

Starting pitcher, Rachel Riley bounced back in the second inning, with a 1-2-3 frame to keep the game within a run.

With two outs and a 2-2 count, Mortimer let one fly over the center field wall for her first home run of the season, which tied the game 1-1.

Szewczyk entered the game for Penn in the bottom of the fourth, after Riley tossed three complete innings. SJ Mull dropped in a two out single, which was followed by an Isabella Fortini double who was thrown out at third, trying to stretch for the extra base.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth, as Yale jumped back on the board in the top of the sixth.

Payton Bean took over in the circle for the Quakers, and a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. Peoples drew a bases-loaded walk to collect an RBI, and extend the lead, 3-1. Sophie Woodridge doubled to clear the bases but was caught in a rundown between second and third, which ended the frame with the score 6-1.

After going down in order in the bottom of the sixth and holding Yale scoreless in the top of the seventh, Penn had one final chance in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Megan Huang beat-out an infield single to the pitcher, which was followed by a Brown slap into left field for a knock. Chloe Lesko then drew a walk, which loaded the bases for Delaney Smith. The sophomore singled down the right field line, plating both Huang and Brown and advancing Lesko to third. Anderson then flied out to center field which ended the potential comeback for the Quakers. The three hits and two runs in the bottom of the seventh were not enough as Penn fell, 6-3.
