#17 MLAX Drops Defensive Battle With #18 North Carolina, 13–9

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The #17 University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team dropped its weekend closer on Sunday afternoon, falling 13-9 on the road to #18 North Carolina.

Gabe Furey netted a first-half hat trick to lead Penn's offensive effort against the Tar Heels. Defender Brendan Lavelle continued to be a dominant force on the other end of the field, scooping up five ground balls while causing two Tar Heel turnovers.

Quaker Notemeal
*Six Quakers found the back of North Carolina's net, with Furey leading the charge. James Shipley scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals, while Ben Smith, Tynan Walsh, Cam Rubin, and Griffin Scane all contributed one to the score sheet.

*Scane's fourth-period tally accounted for his first goal of the 2024 campaign. The sophomore also dished one out to Rubin to record his first multi-point game of the year.

*Goalkeeper Emmet Carroll continued his double-digit save streak, stopping 13 of 25 shots faced against North Carolina.

*The program's all-time winningest coach, Mike Murphy, is one win away from hitting the century mark at the helm for the Quakers. He will have an opportunity to reach 100 wins at Penn next Saturday against Philly Four rival Villanova on the road.

How It Happened
It was a gritty battle from the first whistle as UNC capitalized on the man-up 25 seconds into the game. Senior Furey started his hat trick quest right after the Tar Heel goal, slamming a shot past keeper Collin Krieg almost three minutes in the game to even things out at one.

North Carolina found the back of the net off a Quaker turnover to account for its last goal and lead of the first half. Junior Smith scored his tenth goal of the year off a feed from Chris Canet to tie the game again to fire up the Red and Blue offense.

Eight minutes passed till either time found the back of the net again, with both keepers exchanging saves to keep the game close. A penalty on North Carolina's Tyler Schwarz broke the scoring lull as Furey scored his second of the quarter to give the Quakers a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Carroll and Krieg continued to be forces in their respective nets to open the second quarter, recording early saves on both ends of the keep the battle at one goal. At the 9:33 mark, Furey continued his reign, scoring his first hat trick of the season to double Penn's lead with six minutes left of the first half.

Both offenses ended the quarter quiet, with Carroll making one additional save off a Dominic Pietramala shot to end the first half. The pace changed drastically after the halftime break as the Tar Heels found the boost they needed to score three unanswered goals to lead 5-4 with 9:16 left of the third.

A man-up opportunity almost two minutes later allowed junior Walsh to regain some of the momentum Penn had earlier in the game, recording his tenth goal of the year to tie the contest at five. With less than four minutes on the clock, senior Rubin capitalized off a Tar Heel shot clock violation, accepting a toss from sophomore Scane to give Penn its second and final lead.

North Carolina responded with a five-goal run that lasted from the 1:49 mark of the third to the 12-minute point of the fourth quarter to create a 10-6 deficit that was unfortunately too deep for the Red and Blue to overcome.

Scane's first goal of the season slashed the run with 7:55 left of regulation but was answered by two more goals from the Tar Heels to lengthen the lead to five.

North Carolina native Shipley netted two goals within a minute and a half of each other to try and stir up a late offensive run, but another penalty on Penn secured the 13-9 win for North Carolina.
