Baseball Finishes Off Sweep of Brown With 5-3 Victory; Quakers Start Ivy Play 3-0

PHILADELPHIA – It's fair to say you can start calling it a winning streak. The University of Pennsylvania baseball team battled back from an early deficit and came away with the 5-3 victory to earn the series sweep of Brown Sunday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.

The Quakers have now won five consecutive games, eight of their last nine and improve to 11-9 overall, 3-0 to begin the Ivy League campaign. With the defeat, Brown falls to 4-13 overall, 0-3 in the Ivy.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn extends its win streak to a season-best five straight games, the team's longest since reeling off 10 consecutive wins from April 29 to June 3, 2023.

*The 3-0 start to Ivy play is the program's best start since winning four straight in 2016. Back then, teams played weekend doubleheaders against two different opponents.

*The Quakers are 7-1 at home for the first time since going 12-1 at home from March 25 to April 16, 2017.

*Both Nick Spaventa (2-for-4) and Jarrett Pokrovsky (2-for-3) collected two hits. Connor Chavez, Wyatt Henseler, Carson Ozmer, and Gavin Collins each picked up knocks.

*Spaventa, Pokrovsky and Ozmer each had a double.

*Henseler hit his Ivy League-leading 10th home run of the season in the seventh inning, also recording a conference-best 22nd RBI.

*Josh Katz (2-0) recorded his second win of the year, striking out six and allowing just one run over five innings of work, scattering four hits.

*Carson Ozmer struck out two in his final inning of work to record his second save of the year.

How It Happened
Freshman righty Josh Katz started off strong in the first inning, striking out the side on swinging strikeouts.

Penn left one runner on in the bottom of the inning to send it to the second square at 0-0.

Brown struck first on Reece Rappolli's RBI single to right field, taking an early 1-0 edge.

But Penn tied the game up in the bottom of the second following back-to-back doubles, the latter being an RBI two-bagger for Carson Ozmer, bringing in Jarrett Pokrovsky to score and tie the game up at 1-1.

After Katz retired the side in order to end the third inning, recording two strikeouts, the Quakers brought their bats up in the third to try to break the contest open.

Connor Chavez flied out to begin the third inning, but Penn got back-to-back free passes on a Davis Baker walk and a hit-by-pitch to Wyatt Henseler to put runners on first and second. Baker ended up scoring on Nick Spaventa's single, taking a 2-1 lead. With two away, Henseler scored on a passed ball and Spaventa came across on a wild pitch to give the Quakers a 4-1 cushion.

Both pitchers limited damage in the fourth inning after recorded quick outs on both sides.

With Tommy Delany in to pitch for Katz in the sixth, the Bears cut the Penn lead in half at 4-2 after Nathan Brasher doubled down the right-field line, tacking on a run. John Cerwinski recorded the final two outs to get out of the frame.

Bruno scored again in the top of the seventh as DJ Dillehay laced a two-out single through the left side to score Mark Henshon, making it a one-run ballgame at 4-3.

But it was Henseler who put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning, launching his 10th home run of the season over the left-field fence to take a 5-3 lead.

Carson Ozmer came in to pitch the ninth inning, allowing back-to-back baserunners, but struck out a pair of Bears to end the game and give the Quakers their fifth straight victory.
