Delaware Beats Baseball, 12-6, Tuesday in Liberty Bell Classic

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team fell victim to a nine-run sixth inning in a 12-6 defeat to Delaware Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
 
With the defeat, the Quakers (11-10) conclude a nine-game homestand and see their five-game win streak snapped by the Blue Hens (12-11), who advance to the semifinals next Tuesday at Lafayette.
 
Penn will head to Saint Joseph's next Tuesday in a consolation semifinal matchup.

*Each member of the Penn starting lineup tallied at least one hit with two each for Jarrett Pokrovsky (2-for-4) and Qwynn Ahearn (2-for-4).

*Pokrovsky and Carson Ozmer recorded doubles, while Wyatt Henseler, Nick Spaventa, and Gavin Collins had an RBI.

*Connor Chavez and Collins each drew a pair of walks.

*The Quakers used eight arms, including seven out of the bullpen as Anthoni Kiafoulis (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on two hits. The staff struck out a total of 16 Blue Hens, with four Ks for starter Marty Coyne and three each for Will Tobin, Thomas Shurtleff, and Marshall Mott.
 
How It Happened
Jarrett Pokrovsky scored the game's first run in the second inning on a wild pitch, as Penn took an early 1-0 lead.
 
Delaware tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on an RBI double to left field, but the Quakers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the frame, as Henseler came across to score on another wild pitch and Gavin Collins walked in Nick Spaventa with the bases loaded to re-take a 3-1 edge.
 
Penn scored again in the fourth and fifth innings on an RBI single for Spaventa and a bunt single for Connor Chavez, leading 5-1.
 
In the sixth, three RBI singles, a grand slam, and a fielder's choice scored nine runs in the stanza as the Blue Hens surged ahead, 10-5.
 
UD added another on a fielder's choice in the seventh and another in the eighth to come away with the 12-6 victory.
 
Up Next
The Quakers continue the Ivy slate this weekend with a three-game series at Columbia in New York City. A doubleheader Saturday is set for 11:30 a.m. with a single game Sunday at noon.
