PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The fourth-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's squash team toppled over eighth-ranked Cornell, for an 8-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Although the women's quest for a national championship ended Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals, the Quakers have one final match tomorrow, which will help determine the CSA rankings for next season.
Against the Big Red,
Avni Anand,
Natasha Pensler and
Penelope Oh were the first to see action on the court. Pensler fought hard in her first game, for a back-and-forth 17-15 win. Pensler then dominated game two, 11-1 and cruised to a sweep at No. 6.
Up next, Anand won game one, and fell in game two, but handled the next two games for the victory at No. 3. Oh rounded out the first wave with a four-game win at No. 8, extending Penn's lead 3-0.
Emma Wolf,
Grace Lavin and
Jana Dweek were featured in the next wave. Wolf took control, winning the first two games, but then fell in game three and eventually won in 31 minutes at No. 7.
Dweek secured the victory for Penn with a sweep at No. 4 and completed her match in 34 minutes.
Eventually Lavin's match was defaulted, surrendering a point to Cornell.
Sohaila Ismail,
Ashna Tumuluri and
Franka Vidovic rounded out the day for the Quakers. Ismail was down two games and was in the midst of her third game when her match was retired by Cornell, giving another point to Penn.
Tumuluri held strong in an exciting five-game battle at No. 5, picking up victories in games one, three and five. Lastly Vidovic closed out the day with a 29-minute win in four games at No. 2
