Beaumont, Texas – The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped a pair of games against Lamar on Saturday afternoon, to open its trip to Texas. The Quakers dropped a close game one 1-0, and lost in game two 7-4.
Pen falls to 1-6 and have lost their last six.
The first game featured a pitching duel between Penn's
Payton Bean and Lamar's Emma Wardlaw up until the sixth inning, when the Cardinals were able to scratch across the eventual game-winning run.
In game, two a late offensive push was not enough, as Lamar used a three-run sixth inning to solidify its win.

The Quakers went down in order to open up the day, and although Bean surrendered a hit in the top of the frame, Bean got some help from the defense to wrap up the first inning. In the top of the second,
Chloe Lesko singled to right, but left the bases early, which ended all threats.
Although both teams were able to scatter a few hits throughout the next five innings, neither team could make a push for home plate. In the bottom half of the sixth, the Cardinals led off with a single, and utilized a sacrifice bunt to push the runner to third. A fly out to left allowed for the runner to score, giving Lamar the lead 1-0.
In the top of the seventh, the Quakers went down in order to end the game.

Game two's offense started much earlier for both sides, as Lamar got on the board in the bottom of the third. A three-run double off the bat of Cameron Niedenthal broke open the scoring. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Cardinals were able to produce another run, this time as Makenzie Wright reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in a run, and making the score 4-0.
In the top of the fifth,
Katie Reagan continued to produce for the Quakers, as she knocked in two on a single, cutting the lead in half.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lamar put up three runs on a double, on error by the Penn defense and a single.
Reagan produced another run, this time in the top of the seventh, as she doubled to left to bring in
Sammy Fenton. Then,
Dana Anderson tripled to left, bringing in another run. The Quakers' rally was then cut short as Lesko struck out swinging to end the game.
Quaker Notemeal
- In game one, Penn outhit Lamar four to three, but were not able to get any runners past second base.
- Reagan, Lesko and Anderson each had one hit for the Quakers in game one's loss.
- Bean pitched six innings, gave up just four hits, one earned run as she struck out two in her first loss of the season.
- In game two, Penn also outhit Lamar nine to eight, but also produced two errors compared to the Cardinal's one.
- Reagan and Anderson led the way for the Quakers in game two, each with a pair of hits.
- Seven different Quakers had at least one hit in the 7-4 loss.
- Reagan drove in three, and Anderson knocked in the other run in game two.
- Penn totaled three extra base hits, including two triples in the top of the seventh inning.
- Rachel Reiley was handed the loss, as she went three innings, gave up five hits, three earned runs and walked one batter. In relief, Ella Utschig went three innings, gave up three hits and three earned runs , while striking out one.
