PHILADELPHIA- The University of Pennsylvania softball team secured the series sweep against Coppin State on Sunday with an 11-3 win in six innings. The Quakers took three games from the Eagles to open play at Penn Park.
Penn used a four run, four hit fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie, which led to four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to officially secure the game.
With the win the Red and Blue are 5-9, while the Eagles are 4-7.
FINAL/6: Penn 11, Coppin State 3
Coppin State struck first with a three-run top of the first inning. The Eagles totaled three doubles in the frame which helped bring across the three runs.
The Quakers were able to cut the deficit in the home half of the inning, as
Brianna Brown led things off with a triple to right center,
Delaney Smith was able to reach safely on a ball that was misplayed in the outfield, allowing for Brown to score as Penn trailed 3-1.
Neither team produced any runs until the bottom of the fourth, when Penn tied the game. With two outs,
Julia Mortimer singled down the right field line, and was followed up by a hard-hit ball off the bat of
Madison Bauerle to center field that was dropped by the outfielder, allowing Mortimer to round the bases and score.
Bauerle was able to reach third, and was brought in on a single from
Megan Huang, tying the game 3-3.
Penn began to pile on runs in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run frame. Once again the offense was able to produce with two outs, as
Dana Anderson walked, and
Jade Montgomery came in to pinch run.
Chloe Lesko doubled to center, moving Montgomery to third, setting up both runners in scoring position.
Katie Reagan then tripled to right, bringing in both runs and giving the Quakers their first lead of the game. The scoring continued when Mortimer drove in Katie with a single down the right field line. Bauerle then doubled to centerfield, bringing in Mortimer to conclude the four-run inning for the Red and Blue as Penn now led 7-3.
Brianna Brown led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. A ground out moved Brown to third, as
Sammy Fenton bunted, reached safely and brought home Brown.
In her first at-bat of the afternoon, Montgomery doubled to right field, setting up two runners in scoring position with no outs. Reagan reached on an error to right, which allowed Fenton and Montgomery to both score. With her third hit of the day, Mortimer ended the game with a double in the right-center gap, as Reagan crossed the plate to end the game in six innings with an 11-3 final score.

- Mortimer led the way with three hits for Penn, tying a career-best which she set in the 2022 season against Brown.
- Brown, Fenton and Bauerle each had a pair of hits, as Brown scored twice.
- The Quakers rallied for 13 hits including six extra-base hits, the most in a single game this season.
- Reagan drove in two of Penn's six RBIs.
- In the circle, starter Payton Bean went three innings gave up for hits and three earned runs, striking out one. Kelly Zybura picked up her first win of the season (1-1), going three scoreless relief innings.
- Three wins in a row is a new season best.
- The Quakers have swept a three-game series at Penn Park for the first time since April of 2019, which came against Brown.
