Hartford, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's squash teams suffered losses against Trinity on Sunday afternoon. The top-ranked men's team fell in a nail-biting, 5-4 loss to third-ranked Trinity, while the third-ranked women's team dropped its match 8-1, against top-ranked Trinity.
As a result of Penn beating Yale on Saturday and Yale defeating Princeton on Sunday, the Penn men clinched at least a share of the Ivy Title.
The Quaker women are now 10-3, while the men are 12-1.
The first wave for the women featured
Avni Anand,
Grace Lavin and
Penelope Oh. Lavin fell in game one, and although she was able to play a tight game two, ultimately fell in three games and 22 minutes at No. 6. Penelope kept the scoring close in game two but was swept at No. 7 and 26 minutes.
Anand started off strong with an 11-8 win in game one but dropped the next three to lose in 39 minutes at No. 3.
Up next for the women was
Abbie Rorke,
Emma Wolf and
Franka Vidovic. Rorke was bested by Janna Ashmawy in three games and at No.9. Wolf fell early in game one, dominated game two but dropped the next two to surrender another point to the Bantams at No. 5. At No. 3, Vidovic was tripped up by Jana Safy in three games and 25 minutes.
Natasha Pensler,
Emma Carter and
Sohaila Ismail were the last to see the court for the women. Pensler stumbled in three games at No. 4 and dropped the match in 20 minutes. Carter, playing at No. 8, evened up her match at 1-1 with an 11-6 win in game two, but fell in the next two to lose in four.
Ismail picked up the lone win of the day for the Quakers. Ismail opened the match with an 11-9 win in game one, fell in game two but took the next two games to secure the win at No. 1.
As for the men,
Nick Spizzirri,
Varun Chitturi and
Dana Santry were the first to see the court. Three-out-of-four wins for Penn would come via the first wave. Spizzirri battled to an 11-9 win in game one, dropped game two 8-11, won game three 11-7 and fell in game four 4-11. In game five, with the game tied at 10-10, Spizzirri pulled away with the next two points to secure the first win of the day for the Quakers at No. 3.
Up next, Chitturi faltered in game one, but fought back to win the next three at No. 6 to extend Penn's lead, 2-0. Santry won a five-game thriller, as he competed in the longest match of the day at one hour and 14 minutes at No. 7.
The second slate of men was
Abdelrahman Dweek,
Omar Hafez and
Hao Cui. Dweek was bested by Benedek Takacs in four games and 54 minutes at No. 5. Cui then fell in three games at No. 9, allowing the Bantams to get within striking distance. Hafez fell early in game one, bounced back in game two, but dropped the next two games at No. 2, as the match was now tied 3-3.
The final wave would determine the winner, as the pressure was on for both Penn and Trinity.
Nathan Kueh,
Salman Khalil and
Rehan Luthra were the last men to compete. Kueh dropped his match at No. 4 in 32 minutes to allow the Bantams to take the lead for the first time throughout the match, 4-3. Khalil dropped the opening game 10-12, won game two 11-7 but fell short in the next two games, ultimately solidifying the match for the Bantams.
Luthra was up two games in his match, and his opponent Danial Izham retired in the third game, giving Penn its fourth point of the day.
