How It Happened
Penn jumped on the Bulldogs early in the game, hitting a double-digit lead of 10 before the end of the first quarter when Gayle drilled a jumper to make it 20-10.
Â
By the first bucket of the second quarter, a driving layup by Almqvist, the Quakers had reached their largest lead of the game, 24-13. However, Yale chipped away at its deficit before the half, as Penn carried a 35-33 advantage to the locker room.
Â
A tight battle on the restart saw the Bulldogs take their first lead of the game by the 7:29 mark of the third, 39-38. From there the lead swayed five more times with neither team reaching more than a five-point advantage.
Â
Down the stretch of the final quarter of regulation, Gayle knocked in her fourth three of the game to push Penn ahead by five with 1:58 remaining. However, Yale answered with a layup and a buzzer-beater three to send the game to overtime.
Â
A pair of free throws by Obi to open the extra period gave the Quakers their only lead of overtime. Back-to-back baskets by Yale's Jenna Clark put the Bulldogs out front the rest of the way to secure the final decision.
