Women’s Hoops Keeps It Close, but Sun Devils Pull Away for 73–67 Win

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team had a lead after each of the first three quarters but were done in by poor shooting in the final period as Arizona State pulled away for a 73-67 victory Monday afternoon at Mullett Arena.

The Quakers (8-4) see their five-game win streak come to an end while the Sun Devils (6-7) snap their three-game skid heading into Big 12 play.

Three Penn players finished with double figures in scoring, but were led by freshman Katie Collins, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, adding six assists in 36 minutes.

How It Happened
Penn scored first on a three-pointer and got out to a 5-2 lead to begin the contest. Katie Collins scored five straight points—on a three-pointer and a layup that drew a foul—to give the Quakers an 18-12 advantage at the under-5 media timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, ASU got back within a point but Stina Almqvist converted on a driving layup to go up, 23-19. The Sun Devils battled back a bit, trimming the deficit to 25-23 at the end of the first period.

A couple baskets from Almqvist and Saniah Caldwell allowed Penn to maintain its slim lead to begin the second stanza, but the contest remained tied at the under-5 media timeout, a 32-all game with 5:33 to go.

Collins scored two baskets to extend Penn's lead to 36-32 with 4:02 left, but ASU almost immediately responded with a trey.

Sarah Miller put the Quakers in front by four points on a three-pointer with 2:12 remaining, but the Sun Devils made sure it remained just a one-point game heading into the locker room following Kennedy Fauntleroy's jumper with 24 seconds left.

Beginning the second half, ASU scored the first basket and tied the game up at 42-all. Collins scored another bucket to take a two-point edge before the Sun Devils surged back ahead on a triple, up 44-43.

A 6-0 run courtesy of two clutch buckets for Almqvist put the Quakers ahead 53-48 with 4:32 to play in the third quarter. The Sun Devils struggled to get much of anything going offensively the remainder of the stanza, missing nine consecutive baskets before making one.

Arizona State scored twice in the final minute to make it a 56-54 game heading into the game's last 10 minutes.

Caldwell got called for her fourth personal foul, allowing ASU to tie the game back up at 56-56 on two foul shots. Miller went to the charity stripe on the other end to put Penn back in the lead, but four straight points by the Sun Devils had them back ahead, 61-57 with 8:47 to go.

The Quakers found the lead once again after a two-basket swing from Almqvist and Mataya Gayle made it a 65-64 game with 4:22 left on the clock.

Unfortunately, Penn was held without a field goal the rest of the way as ASU pulled away and ultimately prevailed for a 73-67 victory.
