Baseball Names Four Captains Ahead of 2025 Season

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team is just a little over two months away from the start of their 2025 season and the captains for the two-time defending Ivy League Tournament champions have been revealed, announced Friday by the W. Joseph Blood Head Coach John Yurkow.

The four players leading the Quakers this year are seniors Connor Chavez, Nate Polo, and Will Tobin, as well as junior Jarrett Pokrovsky.

"I'm thrilled that Connor, Nate, Will, and Jarrett will be our captains for the 2025 season," Yurkow said. "These guys have already shown incredible leadership, not just with their skills on the field, but with their positive attitudes and the respect they have for everyone around them.

"These four represent Penn baseball with pride, honoring the tradition, the values, and the commitment to making each other better every day. They're the kind of players who motivate their teammates to be their best and I know they're going to lead this team with passion and purpose. I can't wait to get started in a couple months."

Chavez made quite an impact for Penn in 2024 after arriving in University City following two seasons at Northeast Texas Community College. He started all 46 games he appeared in at second base, hitting .281 with three home runs and 16 RBIs. Chavez led the team in walks (33), finishing second in runs scored (43), and third in on-base percentage (.420). He finished with nine multi-hit games, recording a three-hit game four times and a four-hit outing twice. Chavez was named to the Ivy League's All-Tournament team after hitting .700 (7-for-10) with five RBIs, and six runs scored over two Championship Series wins over Cornell (5/20).

Polo has developed into quite the leader over his last three seasons and earns the captain spot in 2025. A second-team All-Ivy outfielder in 2022, Polo started nine games over 15 appearances for the Quakers in 2024. He pinched hit at Virginia in the opening game of the NCAA Regional on May 31 and got the start in the outfield the following day vs. St. John's, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Polo has saw action in 56 career games for the Red and Blue, recording an OBP of .359.

Tobin put together a solid 2024 season, becoming one of the Quakers' most reliable relievers out of the bullpen. He appeared in a team-high 22 games on the mound, making four starts. Tobin struck out 29 batters, limiting the opposition to a .238 batting average. He had back-to-back wins against Delaware State (4/30) and Dartmouth (5/4), throwing three shutout frames in each. Tobin had a hand in Penn clinching the Ivy League Tournament championship for the second straight year, tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball against the Big Red. He concluded the year with three strikeouts over 1.2 innings in the NCAA Regional against St. John's.

Pokrovsky is a dangerous hitter, showing why on numerous occasions over his first two seasons at Penn. Unfortunately, his promising 2024 campaign—hitting .273 with four homers in 36 starts—ended abruptly late in the year due to a season-ending injury. Pokrovsky finished the season ranked fourth in home runs (4) and runs scored (28). His freshman season was superb, earning honorable mention All-Ivy laurels and was named the inaugural Ivy League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after batting .467 with a home run, six RBIs, and five runs scored.

Penn begins its 2025 season on Feb. 21 at Florida State, the first of a three-game series against the Seminoles. The Quakers return to Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium for their home opener on March 7 vs. Delaware.
