Stellar Second Half Gets #18 MSOC Past #21 Hofstra, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – Now ranked No. 18 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll released Tuesday evening, the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team survived a Top 25 battle against No. 21 Hofstra, winning 3-1 at Rhodes Field.

A Stas Korzeniowski penalty kick goal in the 62nd minute proved to be the game winner and a Jack-Ryan Jeremiah strike in the 81st was the dagger as the Quakers (8-1-1) stay unbeaten at home in 2024 while the Pride (8-3-1) drop their second consecutive match in Philadelphia after falling at Drexel over the weekend.

Quaker Notemeal
*It's the Quakers' second win over a nationally-ranked team this season after topping then-No. 3 Pitt, 1-0, in the season opener back on Sept. 1. It's the first time in the Brian Gill era Penn has posted at least two victories over a nationally-ranked opponent in the same season.

*Penn evens the all-time series against Hofstra to 1-1-0 after the Pride won the first-ever matchup in 2023.

*Leo Burney scored Penn's first goal of the contest, his second of the year. Patrick Cayelli tallied the assist and now has a team-leading five so far.

*Stas Korzeniowski has scored a goal in back-to-back games for the second time this season and now has seven scores. He is now 3-for-3 in PK tries so far.

*Jack-Ryan Jeremiah continued his breakout sophomore season with his third goal of the year and now has seven points through 10 matches played.

*Penn out-shot Hofstra, 16-9, on the night while having the edge in shots on goal, 5-4. The Pride had six corner kicks to the Quakers' five while also accumulating three cautions.

*Korzeniowski totaled four shots—one on goal—while Ben Do added three and both Erickson Sakalosky and Romeo Dahlen had two each.

How It Happened
Both teams put early shots on goal in the first five minutes of the contest before the Quakers struck first in the ninth minute of play. A foul outside the box gifted Patrick Cayelli a great free-kick location. He served the ball inside the box and onto the head of defender Leo Burney, coming through with the go-ahead goal.
Penn continued to control possession for the first part of the first 45 minutes before Hofstra took over in its own offensive third. The Quakers led the Pride in shots, 6-3, until the referee blew the final whistle of the first period.

Hofstra put up a pair of shots off-target to begin the second half before coming through with the equalizer in the 58th minute as Laurie Goddard scored his first of the night.

Just over four minutes later, Korzeniowski found the net for the seventh time on the year—by way of his third penalty kick of the season—to put the Quakers back up, 2-1, in the 62nd minute. Ben Do had a chance saved by the Hofstra keeper in the 72nd minute but the senior found a way to contribute in the 81st, finding Korzeniowski whose out-stretched leg got enough on it to find Jeremiah to go top shelf and put the match to bed, now up 3-1. Each team had one more shot attempt over the final nine minutes with the Quakers coming away with the 3-1 final.
