Field Hockey Scores Last-Second Goal, Stuns Richmond 2-1 in OT

PHILADELPHIA – After Sophie Freedman scored with just one second left in regulation Sunday, Livia Loozen scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team to a stunning 2-1 win over Richmond at Ellen Vagelos Field.

Penn (4-9) was down 1-0 after the Spiders (10-5) scored a third-period goal, but Freedman's last-second tally forced the OT and Loozen got the winner.

*Penn has played in four overtime games this season.

How It Happened
After a defensive first quarter, the offenses woke up in the second quarter. There were eight shots in the quarter total. Richmond peppered Ruby de Frees late in the quarter but she stopped both shots including a kick save.

Richmond came out in the second half on the aggression. It put up two shots and was awarded a penalty corner in the first few minutes. Late in the third, the Spiders broke the scoreless tie. Clara Larripa forced a Penn turnover and blasted it past de Frees.

The beginning of the fourth quarter was reminiscent of the first. There wasn't a shot by either team in the first ten minutes of the quarter.

Down one goal with under four minutes, Penn pulled de Frees. The extra attacker gave its offense the needed juice. The Red and Blue recorded three shots and two penalty corners in two minutes but they were still empty-handed.

With twenty seconds left, the Quakers had one final push. They took the ball down the field and Riley Thomson flipped it inside the circle. Ryan was the first one to get a shot off but Kristen Rake saved it. Amidst a scramble at the cage, Freedman secured the loose ball and scored with one second remaining.

For the second day in a row, Penn was playing overtime hockey. Late into the overtime period, Freedman picked up a yellow card after a collision with Larripa.

Valen Luna Paratore nearly ended the game for Richmond but her shot hit the post. On the counterattack, Loozen dribbed past two defenders to give her a one-on-one with Rake. Her first shot was saved, but Loozen had a wide open net on the second shot and sank it.
