WALLINGFORD, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania women's golf team earned its second sweep of the fall season on Tuesday, winning both the team championship and the individual medalist at the Quinnipiac Classic. Penn shot 305-304-311 to finish at 56-over-par 920 for the tournament. That left them just one stroke ahead of second-place Boston College and seven ahead of the host Bobcats. The other Ivy League team in the field, Harvard, ended the tournament at 942, 22 strokes off Penn's pace.
Individually, freshman
Claire Lu was tied for the individual lead after Monday's first round, took it over alone through the second round, and held on to it for a two-stroke victory in a field of 63 golfers. Lu ended the event at 8-over-par 224. Three golfers tied for second at 226, among them junior
Bridget O'Keefe.
"I am very proud of the team and their effort over the past two days," said head coach
Mark Anderson. "They hung in there through some tough conditions and held on for the win today. And I'm super excited for Claire to get her first win as a Quaker. It was a battle between her and Bridget for first place most of Tuesday and they both played poised golf throughout."
Senior
Debby Chang tied for 13th overall, at 235, followed by junior
Julie Shin (t-24th, 239) and senior
Natalie Cao (35th, 244). Sophomore
Madeleine Zang was in the field as an individual but actually posted the third-best score by a Quaker, tying for 11th overall at 17-over-par 233.
This is Penn's second team title this fall, as the Quakers also won the season-opening Bucknell Invitational in September. Penn has won four team titles in this calendar year, six across the last three seasons, and eight across the last four. Overall, the Red and Blue now have 20 tournament team titles with 19 of them coming under Anderson.
In addition, Lu is the 11th different Penn player to earn medalist honors at a tournament and the second this fall (Chang was medalist at Bucknell). Three different players currently on the roster have been tournament champs at least once, as Shin won the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational last spring.
