LANCASTER, Pa. – The #19 University of Pennsylvania wrestling team battled in the Franklin and Marshall Open on Friday afternoon, with five Quakers ending the tournament in the top ten.
Underclassmen were the name of the game today as freshman
Jude Swisher won the 157 bracket to place first at the Open and highlight Penn's performance in Lancaster. Sophomore
Kelly Dunnigan (149) followed in second place, freshman
Martin Cosgrove (197) finished in sixth, and sophomores
Hunter Gandy (149) and
Sean Seefeldt (149) both finished in eighth to round out the Red and Blue in the top ten.
Swisher picked up five straight wins en route to his first individual tournament victory as a Quaker. He started his day with two takedowns in the first and third before riding time out against JT Chance (Unattached-George Mason) to take the match by decision, 8-3. In the round of 16, Swisher dominated, tallying nine points from takedowns against LIU's Jamison Colongione in the first two periods before winning by major decision, 13-3, to push on to the quarterfinals, where he beat Reed Fullmer by decision, 7-0. Swisher rolled through the semifinals against Maryland's Michael North, with a four-point second period securing his spot in the finals by decision, 5-2. The first-year kept his momentum going in the first place bout against Dylan Evans (Unattached-Pittsburgh), scoring seven points, with six coming from takedowns in the first two periods, to win the F&M Open by major decision, 10-0.
Dunnigan had a strong run at the F&M Open, winning five bouts to earn the highest placement in his collegiate career with second place. The sophomore opened his quest to the first place match with three straight wins from tech falls in the rounds of 64, 32, and 16. Dunnigan tallied 11 points in the first period against LIU's William McMullen, holding the Shark to only two points in a 17-2 decision. Dunnigan recorded 17 points again in the round of 32, with 14 points coming from the first after he had racked up three straight nearfalls over Cale Roggie (Unattached-George Mason). His third tech fall victory of the day over Lucas Kapusta (Unattached-Lock Haven) was thanks to a ten-point second from back-to-back nearfalls. In the quarterfinals contest, Dunnigan battled hard against EIWA foe Kelvin Griffin (Lehigh), scoring the sole takedown of the match in the first to win by decision, 3-1, and move on to the semifinals. In his last and sole ranked victory of the tournament, Dunnigan defeated #21 Ethen Miller (Maryland) in sudden victory, getting the only takedown in the bout during overtime to win by decision, 5-2.
Cosgrove had a solid outing at the open, grabbing four contests to place sixth. The freshman recorded three wins by falls over Rutgers' Nico Colucci (1:24), Millersville's Bruce Vaughan (1:54), and Binghamton's Cayde Bevis (0:46). His final win of the tournament came in the consolation bracket's round of eight against Navy's Daniel Willaims, with a seven-point first period from a takedown and nearfall solidifying his win by major decision, 12-1.
