Field Hockey Puts Up Highest Goal Total Since 2014 In Hoya Thrashing

PHILADELPHIA – It was a hot day all around on Friday afternoon, the weather outside and the offense for the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team, cruising to an 8-1 thrashing over Georgetown at Ellen Vagelos Field.

Quaker Notemeal
*The eight goals are the most by the Quakers since the 2014 season when they won 9-1 in the season-opener against Lehigh at Ellen Vagelos Field.

*Sophomore Livia Loozen posted a career game, piecing together her first collegiate hat trick to go with an assist for seven points. Last season through 12 games, she totaled seven points including two game-winners. She scored all three of her shot attempts.

*Loozen was joined by five other Quakers who scored in the game: Meghan McGinley, Julia Ryan, Allison Kuzyk, Emily Stafford, and Lily Kumar.

*It was the first collegiate goal for McGinley, Ryan, and Kumar.

*Stafford, a freshman, has now scored in two straight games while adding her first collegiate assist on Friday.

*Junior Courtney Kenah, who led the team in points and goals last season, had a career-high two assists in the game off penalty corner inserts.

*She was joined in the assist column by McGinley, Ryan, Sophie Freedman, Loozen, Stafford, and Dylan Breier.

*The stout backline of the Quakers limited the Hoyas to just five shots with two on target. Their play was clean as well, only surrendering one penalty corner.

*Senior Frederique Wollaert tended the cage for the full 60 minutes, making one save.

How It Happened
Through the first quarter, the two squads matched up quite evenly, nearly splitting shots 5-3 in advantage of Penn while each finding the back of the cage. Penn scored first when Stafford connected on her second goal in two games. With four minutes remaining in the half, the Hoyas responded off a penalty corner to draw it even at the break.

From there on out, it was all Penn. The Quakers found the back of the cage three times in the second quarter off the sticks of Loozen, Kuzyk and McGinley to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the half.

Loozen capped off her first career hat trick in the third quarter, then Ryan and Kumar tacked on the final two goals in the fourth to seal up the 8-1 decision.

Quotables
"After a very challenging opening weekend we really wanted to build on the progress and lessons learned against highly competitive teams. The transition proved to be seamless as we maintained our playing principles and focused on what we want Penn Field Hockey to look like this season. We played through errors and played equally hard as we did last weekend and that was the goal." – Colleen Fink, Head Coach

"We've been working on playing our best game no matter the opponent, and not settling no matter the score. I felt this on an individual and team level throughout the game. That mentality is what brought us our result today." – Livia Loozen, Sophomore Forward

Up Next
The Quakers will look to keep the momentum alive on Sunday, wrapping up their four-game home stand against Drexel for their annual Believe in Brynn game. Start time is set for noon at Ellen Vagelos Field.
