Men’s Soccer Opens Ivy League Play with 1-1 Draw Against Yale

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer battled the rain and the Yale Bulldogs to a 1-1 draw at Penn Park on Saturday night.

Junior midfielder Brandon Curran scored his first goal of the 2023 season during the 64th minute to knot the match at its eventual tally of one goal apiece. The result pushed the Quakers record to 2-2-3 and the Bulldogs to 3-3-1; it was the Ivy League opener for both.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn kept its streak against Yale alive, with the series moving to five Quaker wins and five ties in the last ten matchups.

*Senior goalkeeper Nick Christoffersen held strong on the defensive front, saving two Yale shots on goal. Christoffersen's goals-against-average moves to 0.71 on the season to go along with a .783 save percentage.

*The Quakers' offensive efforts were fierce, as Penn had seven shots on goal. Juniors Ben Do and Curran both recorded a pair of shots, with one of Curran's finding the back of the net. Aaron Messer, Oliver Pratt, and Stas Korzeniowski attempted shots on goal in the game as well.

*Saturday's game got a bit chippy as eight yellow cards were handed out, with six going to the Bulldogs.

*Christoffersen, Do, Pratt, Leo Burney, and Mattias Hanchard played the full 90 minutes.

How it Happened
Christoffersen was put to work early in Saturday's match, saving a shot on goal in the fourth minute by Yale's Jake Schaffer. The Bulldogs tried to stir up their offense again in the 21st minute with another shot at the senior goaltender, but Christoffersen was equal to the task and kept things scoreless.

Penn's offense caught a spark right near the end of the first half, as Do and Messer recorded back-to-back shots on goal in the 36th and 38th minutes. The Quakers made a final offensive attempt in the 39th minute of the first half, as Curran slammed his first shot on goal.

Yale got to work quickly to start the second half, as Max Rogers broke the scoring drought to put the Bulldogs on the board in the 52nd minute.

Around the 61st minute of the game, three straight yellow cards were handed, with two going to Yale. Shortly after that, the junior Do slammed a cross from the left side that was one-timed home by Curran. His first goal of the season tied things at 1-1.

Though the score stayed the same for the remainder of the match, the Quakers attempted three more shots at Yale's netminder and had a glorious opportunity to get the three points when they were awarded a penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining. However, Korzeniowski rattled the PK off the upper right crossbar and it bounced out of harm's way to keep things level.

Up Next
The Quakers hit the road next weekend, heading to Dartmouth on Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff against the Big Green is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Burnham Field in Hanover, N.H.
