Men’s Soccer’s Defense Keeps Broncs in Check In Scoreless Draw

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Its second shutout in as many matches, the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team played Rider to a scoreless 0-0 draw Tuesday evening at Ben Cohen Field.
 
After senior goalkeeper Nick Christoffersen had another spectacular evening between the pipes, the Quakers record becomes 1-2-1 after the season's first four matches. The Broncs (2-1-2) have drawn their last two outings.

*Penn is now 3-1-1 all time against Rider, unbeaten vs. the Broncs since 1981.
 
*Nick Christoffersen increases his shutout streak to 263 consecutive minutes in goal for Penn.
 
*Christoffersen made five saves against the Broncs, just four days after a six-stop performance at #14 Penn State Friday.
 
*He decreases his goals-against average to 0.75 on the year. He boasts a save percentage of .813.
 
*Penn had just one shot on goal—Charlie Gaffney in the 30th minute—while reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week Michael Hewes had two shots, with another for Brandon Curran.
 
*Rider out-shot Penn, 17-4, including seven shots—two on goal—for Zaki Alibou.
 
*Corner kicks were nearly even at 5-4 in favor of Rider, while the Broncs also had the edge in fouls, 9-5.
 
How It Happened
Nick Christoffersen kept Rider out of the goal early with saves in the 10th and 12th minutes, both attempted by Zaki Alibou.
 
Penn's first and only on-target opportunity came in the 30th minute when Charlie Gaffney missed bottom left.
 
Rider had a pair of shots miss left and right, respectively, as the two teams went to the locker room tied, 0-0.
 
Michael Hewes had two shot attempts sail wide in the 50th and 52nd minutes while Christoffersen made another save in the 53rd to keep zeroes on the scoreboard. The senior made two more saves in the 63rd and 71st minutes to keep the Broncs' offense quiet as the Quakers held on for the point.
