Harris Tabbed As Sprint Football’s Defensive Coordinator

PHILADELPHIA – Bobby Ray Harris has been named the new Defensive Coordinator for the University of Pennsylvania sprint football program, announced Wednesday by William R. Wagner Head Coach Jerry McConnell. With an impressive coaching resume in both collegiate and professional football, Harris brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the team.

Harris previously served the Quakers in 2022 as the team's video coordinator.

"Coach Harris is an exciting addition to our coaching staff," said McConnell. "His proven track record of developing highly effective defensive strategies, coupled with his ability to motivate players will undoubtedly elevate our team's performance. We are confident that his expertise will contribute significantly to the continued success of our program."

Having previously worked in the NFL for the St. Louis Rams, Harris has honed his skills at the highest level of the game. His time in the professional ranks has provided him with invaluable insights and strategies that will undoubtedly enhance Penn's defensive unit.

He has also made significant contributions to several prominent collegiate programs throughout his career. As an offensive assistant at Florida State under the legendary Bobby Bowden, he gained invaluable experience in working with high-powered offensive schemes. His time at Middle Tennessee—serving as running backs and special teams coach—further solidified his reputation for excellence.

Additionally, Harris has excelled in coaching positions at Rowan University, William Paterson University, and Saint Peter's. His diverse experience has allowed him to work with different defensive units and refine his coaching techniques. Moreover, his tenure at Haddon Heights High School showcased his ability to mentor and inspire young athletes, laying a strong foundation for their future successes.

"I am thankful to head coach Jerry McConnell for presenting me with this opportunity. I am eager to embark on this new chapter of my coaching career and am thrilled to continue my time at Penn," said Harris. "I am looking forward to working with this talented group of student-athletes, as well as collaborating with the coaching staff to create a formidable defense that will compete at the highest level."

In addition to Harris, McConnell announced the addition of Tristan Freeman as Linebackers Coach, Phil Eisenstein as Defensive Line Coach/Special Teams Coordinator and Wonwook Do as Wide Receivers Coach.

The Quakers open the 2023 season at Chestnut Hill on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
