Yurkow Named ABCA/ATEC Sports East Region Coach of the Year

PHILADELPHIA – Ivy League Coach of the Year John Yurkow added another award to his 2023 haul Tuesday afternoon after he was named the East Region Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and ATEC Sports.

Yurkow led Penn to a school-record 34 wins this season, breaking the former mark of 33 set just last year. Those 34 wins included a pair of victories over #13 Auburn and Samford during NCAA Regionals in early June, the Quakers' first victories in the NCAA Championship since 1990.

Penn earned its NCAA Championship trip following a 3-0 performance during the inaugural Ivy League Tournament in late May, part of a 10-game winning streak for the Red and Blue that bisected the conclusion of the regular season and start of the postseason. The first five games of that 10-game run helped Penn bring home the program's first outright Ivy League regular season championship since 1995.

Among the aforementioned accomplishments, Yurkow picked up his 200th win in University City, while the team surpassed 2,000 all-time victories as a program. In conference play, Penn has won 33 of 42 Ivy League games since the start of 2022 (78.6 percent), the best two-year conference mark for the program in 35 years.

Yurkow becomes the first Ancient Eight skipper to earn an ABCA Regional honor since Yale's John Stuper in 2017.
