Four Quakers Named to USA Lax Mag's All-America Team

PHILADELPHIA – The postseason honors have already begun to roll in as the University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team was well-recognized on USA Lacrosse Magazine's All-America team, announced by the publication on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior middie Sam Handley made the first team, senior SSDM Piper Bond was tabbed to the second team while senior LSM BJ Farrare and junior defender Brendan Lavelle earned honorable-mention nods.

Handley enjoyed another strong season in his fifth and final year donning the Red and Blue. A three-time unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection, he led Penn's offense in 2023 with a team-high 55 points, 30 goals and 25 assists. Handley netted three game-winning goals on the year and ends his college career with 194 points, ranked fourth all-time in program history. He also scored 104 goals (sixth) and dished out 90 assists (fifth) put the finishing touches on an impressive career. This is the second straight season Handley earned first-team All-America honors from USA Lax Mag.

Bond will be known for his consistency on defense and in the midfield for the Quakers after a strong college career. He secured first-team All-Ivy laurels for the second straight year in 2023. Outside of FOGO Chris Arceri, Bond had a team-high tying 33 ground balls for the Quakers in 2023, adding seven caused turnovers. He also scored a goal against Duke earlier in the season. Bond was named the University of Pennsylvania's Division of Recreation and Athletics' (DRIA) recipient of the Class of 1915 Award, the department's most prominent senior award. For his effort on the field as well as in the classroom, Bond was also named the team's Academic All-Ivy representative. This is the first time he has been honored by USA Lax Mag and is an All-American for the third time in his career.

Farrare is appearing on USA Lacrosse Magazine's All-America list for the first time in his career after another strong season with Penn in 2023. He took home first-team All-Ivy honors for the first time this year after finishing the season tied for second on the team with eight caused turnovers and tied for first among non-FOGOs with 33 ground balls. The long-stick middie made an appearance in all 13 games for the Quakers, closing his Penn career with 142 GBs and 51 CTs.

Lavelle had a brilliant junior season for the Quakers in 2023, earning first-team All-Ivy honors unanimously. His appearance on USA Lax Mag's All-America team is the second of his career after receiving honorable-mention laurels in 2022. Lavelle finished the year tied for team lead with eight caused turnovers, adding 25 ground balls. He made a start in all 13 games this year as a consistent staple of Penn's defense throughout the season.

Penn's season came to an end last Friday night after a 9-8 defeat to eventual champion Princeton in the semifinals of the Ivy League Tournament. The Quakers conclude the year with a 7-6 overall record, going 4-2 in Ivy play with a second-place finish.
