Lightweights Head to Navy For Callow Cup, 1919 Trophy Races

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania lightweight men's crew has one final tune-up before the EARC Sprints, which will run on Sunday, May 14 in Worcester, Mass. That test comes early Saturday morning, when the Quakers travel down to Annapolis to row against Navy. The Callow Cup and 1919 Trophy will both be on the line, the Callow Cup in the Varsity Eights race and the 1919 Trophy (a total points award) across the day's racing.

Navy owns a 34-31 lead in the all-time Callow Cup standings, and wrested the Cup back from Penn last year with a seven-second victory on the Schuylkill River. The Quakers last won in 2019 and have five wins dating back to 2013 after not winning once from 2001-12.

In the latest IRCA/IRA national polls, released Wednesday, this weekend's top two boats were ranked accordingly…
1V8: Navy 6th, Penn 7th
2V8: Penn 5th, Navy 7th

Callow Cup History
The Callow Cup was established by the Friends of Pennsylvania Rowing on April 23, 1955, in honor of Russell "Rusty" Callow, who coached at both Penn and the U.S. Naval Academy. Callow retired following the 1959 season after being associated with rowing for more than 50 years. The 1919 Trophy is given to the overall points winner from the day's races.

1919 Trophy History
The 1919 Trophy (overall points on the day): On May 31, 1919, the American Rowing Association added a "Special Eight-Oared Shells (150 lb. crews)" rowing event to their 15th annual regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, a race that featured lightweight crews from Penn and Navy. This is believed to be the first known record of intercollegiate lightweight racing in the United States.
