Women's Golf Heading to Florida For NCAA Regional

PHILADELPHIA - The good times keep on coming for the members of the Penn women's golf team, who found out this afternoon that they were included in the NCAA's Palm Beach Gardens Regional field. The Quakers are one of 12 teams that will play in the regional, to be hosted at the PGA National Resort Palm Beach from May 8-10.

Penn is the 11th seed in the regional, ahead of Quinnipiac. In order of seed and with current national Golfstat ranking in parentheses, the other teams in Palm Beach Gardens will be LSU (3), Texas (10), Northwestern (15), UCF (19), Duke (28), Michigan State (34), California (39), Arkansas (45), Alabama (48), and South Florida (57). Penn is currently 100th in the Golfstat rankings.

This will be Penn's second appearance in the postseason in women's golf, the other coming in 2010. The Quakers earned the NCAA regional bid by winning the Ivy League Championship team title this past weekend at Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y. Penn went wire-to-wire in winning the event and defeated second-place Harvard by four strokes.

"We are excited to travel to Florida to compete in the NCAA Regional Championship," said head coach Mark Anderson. "The women have had a great season that culminated in an amazing performance last weekend, and we are hoping to continue that momentum into Regional qualifying. I'm happy with being placed in the Palm Beach regional; this will be our second trip to the Sunshine State this spring, so it should be a comfortable spot for our women."

Penn's lineup at the Ivy Championships included seniors Susan Xiao and Selina Li, sophomore Natalie Cao, and freshmen Bridget O'Keefe and Julie Shin. All five earned All-Ivy honors based on their finishes at Ivies, led by O'Keefe who got first-team honors with her third-place finish. Cao was second-team with a sixth-place finish while Li, Shin and Xiao all tied for tenth and also earned second-team honors.

The NCAA is hosting six regionals this year, each field consisting of 12 teams and six individuals. In addition to Palm Beach Gardens, the other 12-team regionals are being conducted in Athens, Ga. (University of Georgia Golf Course); Pullman, Wash. (Palouse Ridge Golf Club); Raleigh, N.C. (Lonnie Poole Golf Course); San Antonio, Texas (TPC San Antonio); and Westfield, Ind. (The Club at Chatham Hills).

From each of those fields, the top five teams and low individual from a non-advancing team will move on to the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, which this year takes place May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. This is the first year the NCAA women's field will feature 30 teams, expanding from 24 previously, and 156 golfers will compete at the Championship compared to 147 previously.
