Baseball Falls Late at Rider, 4-1

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team carried a combined no-hitter into the seventh inning, but conceded four late runs in a 4-1 loss to the Rider Broncs Wednesday afternoon.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
John Cerwinski turned in, arguably, his finest outing as a Quaker, retiring nine of 10 batters faced, striking out three.

* Thomas Shurtleff retired six of seven batters faced, striking out three as well. Brian Zeldin tossed a season-high three innings, retiring all nine batters he faced, striking out three.

* Eight of nine Quaker starters had one hit apiece. Jarrett Pokrovsky walked twice, reaching base a team-high three times.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Back-to-back one-out doubles by Appel and Henseler put the Quakers up in the first inning.

After yielding a leadoff walk in the Rider first, Cerwinski retired the last nine batters he faced. Shurtleff came on in relief of Cerwinski and struck out three in two innings of work.

Millikan came on to pitch the sixth and kept the no-hitter intact, though a pair of walks, a stolen base, and a sacrifice fly pushed the tying run across. After a scoreless seventh for both sides, Rider pushed the go-ahead run across in the eighth, adding a pair of insurance runs as well.

The Quakers were set down in order in the ninth to end the game.
